A stated opponent of gay marriage, author Orson Scott Card has issued a statement in reply to groups attempting to boycott the film adaptation of his 1985 sci-fi novel ENDER’S GAME, starring Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield, Ben Kingsley, Viola Davis, and Hailee Steinfeld. The Gavin-Hood directed film has been gaining steam thanks to fans of the novel and the general starpower of the production, but at least one opponent group, called skipendersgame, is attempting to stop people from seeing the film because of Card’s personal views. In response, Card has issued the following statement via Entertainment Weekly:

Ender’s Game is set more than a century in the future and has nothing to do with political issues that did not exist when the book was written in 1984.

With the recent Supreme Court ruling, the gay marriage issue becomes moot.  The Full Faith and Credit clause of the Constitution will, sooner or later, give legal force in every state to any marriage contract recognized by any other state.

Now it will be interesting to see whether the victorious proponents of gay marriage will show tolerance toward those who disagreed with them when the issue was still in dispute.

With the recent Supreme Court ruling it would appear that Card’s views have been “defeated.” It will be interesting to see how the recent rulings and Card’s stance on the issue, both past and present, will affect the film, if at all.

What do you think? Does this affect your plans on seeing ENDER’S GAME?

ENDER’S GAME hits theaters on November 1, 2013.
