Disney+ Day has brought the news that a revival of X-Men: The Animated Series is headed to the streaming service in 2023 and it will be joined by Spider-Man: Freshman Year.

As revealed by “The Wrap“, the official title of the new animated series will be X-Men 97. The animated series is already in production at Disney+ and it will pick up after the original series ended, coincidentally enough, back in September 1997. The last episode of the original series ended with Professor Charles Xavier gravely injured in an attack by Henry Peter Gyrich and his only hope to survive is to take Princess Lilandra up on her offer to leave Earth and go to the Shi’ar empire. The X-Men are joined by Xavier’s best friend and their biggest rival, Magneto, to say goodbye to their leader during his last moments on planet Earth.

Returning to the voice cast for X-Men 97 are Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Adrian Hough, Christopher Britton, Catherine Disher, Chris Potter, Alison Sealy-Smith, Alyson Court. New cast members will include Jennifer Hale, Anniwaa Buachie, Ray Chase, Matthew Waterson, JP Karliak, Holly Chou, Jeff Bennett, AJ LoCascio. The Head writer and executive producer on the series will be Beau DeMay while the supervising director is Jake Castorena and supervising producer is Charley Feldman.

Also announced was Spider-Man: Freshman Year and this animated effort is expected to follow Peter Parker/Spider-Man’s early years before becoming the hero we all know and love. Not much more info was revealed about the project, or even if Tom Holland will be involved to do vocal work. On Marvel’s What If…? Hudson Thames voiced the character so he’s also an option that could be available.
