As one of the last projects of the former DCEU, it remains to be seen what the future has in store for Blue Beetle, but James Gunn has said that while Superman: Legacy will be the first movie in the DCU, Blue Beetle will be the first DCU character. That would suit Xolo Maridueña just fine, as he told Entertainment Weekly that he wants “to do 12 more years of Blue Beetle.

Xolo Maridueña added that he has spoken with James Gunn and Peter Safran about the future of Blue Beetle. “Yeah, I have had the chance to speak with them,” Maridueña said. “They’re really happy for our project and so excited for us to kick off what is to eventually become the next DCU. But with this movie, really what we wanted to highlight was Jaime’s story and the Reyes family’s story. I’m excited to see what they have in mind and how Blue Beetle and the rest of his family might loop into the rest. But my heart is already so fulfilled with this movie. If we do 20 of these movies and 40 cameos or if it’s just this one, what’s most exciting to me is the opportunity for people to see it and have little kids everywhere saying, ‘Oh my gosh, this guy looks like me. I can be a hero, too.’

The actor also spoke of getting to try on the Blue Beetle costume for the very first time. “I remember genuinely believing that I was a superhero,” he said. “It makes your posture different! It was really fantastic. Also, I didn’t really know what to expect going into a big superhero movie like this. I didn’t know if it was going to be the type where we were going to be on a green screen for four months or what. So, getting to try on the suit for the first time and see that everything was practical, I was so excited.

As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab,” reads the official Blue Beetle synopsis. “When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle.

In addition to Xolo Maridueña, Blue Beetle also stars Adriana Barraza (Rambo: Last Blood) as Jaime’s grandmother, Nana, Damían Alcázar (Narcos: Mexico) as his father, Elpidia Carrillo (Mayans M.C.) as his mother, Bruna Marquezine (God Save the King) as Jenny Kord, Raoul Max Trujillo (Sicario) as Carapax, with Oscar winner Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking) as Victoria Kord, and George Lopez (Rio) as Jaime’s Uncle Rudy. The film also stars Belissa Escobedo (American Horror Stories) as Jaime’s sister, Milagro, and Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows) as Dr. Sanchez. Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) directed Blue Beetle from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala).

Blue Beetle will hit theaters on August 18th.
