Zac Efron evidently NOT up for the lead role in Akira

One of the weirder rumors to arrive recently was one that put Zac Efron in the lead role of the Hughes Brothers’ AKIRA. Not one fan of the title was able to muster up any enthusiasm for the idea, but this is Hollywood after all, and they very rarely try to please the fickle geeks and fanboys; hence, no one would be too surprised if that’s how things hashed out… But it seems like that won’t be the case.

According to Digital Spy, reps for the Hughes boys denied the Efron chatter, saying the rumor is “not true”. That’s got to bring a big ol sigh of relief to you AKIRA purists out there. I had a hard time picturing Efron hanging out on set with the Hughes Brothers anyway…

Still no word on whether or not the Morgan Freeman-as-the-Colonel rumor holds any water; hell, maybe this movie isn’t even really being made and we’re all just wasting our damn time!
