Charlie Kaufman and the Kung-Fu Panda?

Charlie Kaufman, Oscar-winner for ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and director of the impossibly mind-bending SYNECDOCHE, NY, is writing KUNG-FU PANDA: THE KABOOM OF DOOM? Well…sorta.

Kaufman has been brought in by DreamWorks to do a script polish on PANDA 2. While the assignment amounted to only about two weeks worth of work and writers take script polish work all the time (Quentin Tarantino worked on the scripts for MEN IN BLACK, CRIMSON TIDE and THE ROCK), it’s notable for being an unusually unusual pairing of writer and material. But is it so unusual?

While Kaufman’s recent cinematic work has been geared more toward the adult intellectual, his resume isn’t devoid of kids fare or comedies. Kaufman was a writer on the shortlived “Dana Carvey Show” (along with both Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert) and even developed a Disney TV series titled “Astronuts” about a teen rock band stuck in space (it never made it beyond pilot).

High-profile but uncredited polish work is something that rarely becomes public so it’d be interesting to hear what other films bear the mark of Kaufman.

KUNG-FU PANDA 2 is set to hit theaters in 3D next summer.
