City of God director Fernando Meirelles tackles sex and social classes in his upcoming film 360

If you haven’t seen CITY OF GOD, do so immediately. For me, it’s one of my absolute favorites and I’d argue one of the very best films of this decade. And though I wasn’t enamored with the Brazilian-born director’s last film BLINDNESS (few were), Fernando Mereilles’s work on CITY OF GOD, as well as 2005’s THE CONSTANT GARDENER, is more than enough to pique my interest when word comes that the man’s got a new project brewing.

According to Mike Fleming at Deadline, that new project is a film entitled 360, written by English scribe Peter Morgan (TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY, THE DAMNED UNITED, FROST/NIXON).

Here’s Fleming with more on the project: “360 examines sexual morals within and between social classes, using various pairs of characters who have sexual encounters in and outside of their social classes. Morgan’s inspiration is Reigen, the play by Austrian author/playwright Arthur Schnitzler. Originally published in 1900, the play was scandalous when first made public. It has since been turned into several films that include the 1950 French language drama La Ronde. Dor Film is also producing 360, a contemporized version of Schnitzler’s work.”

I’m not surprised Mereilles is tackling this subject matter since it’s interestingly touched upon in ways in CITY OF GOD. I’m definitely looking forward to it.
