Child’s Play remake threatens to be made yet again for a 2012 release

Last Updated on July 23, 2021

We’ve heard this old song a few times before so I suppose, as it’s been a while, it’s time to play it again. Just don’t go marking anything down on your calendar yet.

According to MovieWeb, the remake of CHILD’S PLAY is (once again) ready to become a reality. As it was back in 2008. Though the details are the same – it’s going to be “darker”, as if the original wasn’t dark enough – the difference now appears to be the fact that the messy rights situation to the title has now been sorted out. MGM owns the rights to the original film, while Universal owns the sequels. Apparently, a deal has been reached between the two studios, and now they can go about their remake.

The plan is supposedly to go into production later this year for a release sometime in 2012. Brad Dourif (once again: supposedly) will return to voice Chucky, while Don Mancini will script, as he’s done on all of the other films in the series.

We’ll see how this shakes out. For now I’ll continue to be skeptical until some serious movement happens, like a director being signed. The point of a remake with a the original writer and star still escapes me, though. I dare say, if you’re going to remake it, do something completely different or don’t do it at all. That, or just re-release the damn thing.

Jennifer Tilly’s Tiffany will presumably not return…
