"Game of Thrones" star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau joins sci-fi thriller Oblivion

02.13.2012by: Jake Dee

With Tommy Cruise reigniting his box-office shine this year, he and Joseph Kosiniski (and Universal) are fastidiously choosing the supporting roster for the epic sci-fi thriller OBLIVION (aka HORIZONS). We already know the great Morgan Freeman has signed on, joining Olga Kurylenko (below) and Andrea Riseborough. Well folks, another supporting player is being launched into the cosmos...

Deadline has it that "Game of Thrones" star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (above) will play Sykes in OBLIVION, an expert in weapons and military technology who is said to be intelligent and physically imposing.

With Oscar winning scribe Michael Arndt retooling script-work by William Monahan and Karl Gajdusek:

The untitled thriller centers on a battle-damaged soldier who, assigned to a desolate planet after a court-martial, patrols the bleak landscape in an effort to destroy the last vestiges of a primitive alien race. When a mysterious traveler arrives unexpectedly, their lives become inextricably linked as they are forced to question everything they know about this world and themselves.

Cruise will play the soldier who's stuck alone on the planet, repairing the drones that patrol and destroy a savage alien life form. He encounters a beautiful woman who crashes in a craft, and their experience together forces him to question his world view.

OBLIVION (HORIZONS, or whatever the hell it's called) hits July 19, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: You been watching "Game of Thrones"? Is this Waldau fella a standout or what?
