George A. Romero

Before legendary filmmaker George A. Romero passed away in July, he had been selected to receive a (long overdue) star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The plan was for his star to be unveiled in October, and that plan is still moving forward, with the dedication ceremony scheduled to take place at 11:30am PDT on Wednesday, October 25th.

Romero's will be the 2621st star to be added to the Walk of Fame since 1960. Leron Gubler, President and CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, will be serving as emcee of the dedication ceremony, with filmmaker Edgar Wright and FX artist Greg Nicotero set to appear as guest speakers. Romero's widow Suzanne Desrocher-Romero will be accepting the star on behalf of his family.

The ceremony will be held at 6604 Hollywood Boulevard, in front of the Hollywood Toy & Costume Store.

Ana Martinez, producer of the Walk of Fame, had this to say about the event:

The fact that fans nominated Mr. Romero for the Walk of Fame star speaks volumes of how loved he was for his work in the horror film genre and for being the person he was. Fortunately, prior to his passing he learned that he was selected for a star, and we are saddened that he won’t be here with us for his special day."

It is very sad that Romero won't be there for the unveiling of his star, but I am glad that he's going to be getting one. He wasn't too fond of the Hollywood system, but he deserves all the honors Hollywood can send his way. The man created an entire sub-genre and introduced moviegoers to a new, enduring type of monster with NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD – I can't think of a more Walk of Fame-worthy accomplishment than that.

The dedication ceremony will be streamed on the WalkofFame.com website as it happens.

On the evening of Wednesday, October 25th, the celebration of Romero will continue at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, where a Q&A with celebrity fans and friends will be followed by a screening of CREEPSHOW. You can pick up a ticket to that event at AlexTheatre.org.
