It's the Booze Talkin', The IT movie may be the horror event of the year!

When I was a child, I came across something that chilled me to the core. It was a late night airing of a certain TV mini-series, one that unfortunately has not aged well. However, Stephen King’s It got under my skin in all sorts of ways. Even with that silly finale, I didn’t care because I dug all the giant spider movies so frankly I was happy. In fact, I was so ecstatic about the story that I went and picked up the book right away. And that’s when I realized just how chilling Pennywise the clown can be. King’s novel is a brilliant essay on the fears of childhood. As much as the two-part television event got me, it was the novel that gave me pause as I went off to slumber land.

Thankfully, Pennywise has remained a pretty iconic name in the world of horror. It was the brilliance of Tim Curry as the embodiment of evil that made the TV version scary. The actor was able to add a level of fun even as his darker side began to shine through. Horror has a number of great villains, and no matter the quality of this presentation, Curry gave one of the best performances in genre ever. The actor made lines like “We all float down here” all the more spine tingling with his incredible work.

As amazing as Curry was, the television production isn't nearly as scary as I remembered. Which is perhaps part of the reason the upcoming big screen take on the novel is developing a ton of buzz. That of course isn’t the only reason. If you watched the trailer - once it dropped it was an instant intenet sensation - everybody had a little taste of the horror to come. And frankly, everything from the creepy clown in the sewer to the supernatural slide show looked like the filmmakers may have gotten this right.

For me personally, my biggest concern was in the casting of Pennywise. Bill Skarsgård was an interesting choice. The family name certainly carries a bit of weight considering the talent that has come from it - Stellan Skarsgård is his father and Alexander is his brother. And while nothing from his past work screamed Pennywise, he has proven to be quite the actor. In fact, just seeing him this weekend in ATOMIC BLONDE has me a bit more excited. There is something about Bill that feels like he will bring a whole new level to this fearful monster in clown make up.

Another thing that has been building the hype machine is the fact that I know of a few people that have actually seen Stephen King’s IT - no names given here folks. Yes, they’ve witnessed the Andrés Muschietti directed feature. And yes, the word on the street isn’t just good, it’s actually great. With such an amazing novel, and a talented actor taking on the lead antagonist, we may be in for not only a good horror film, but perhaps an amazing one. If the people behind this new cinematic take are able to translate the deeply horrific nature of the novel, we may have something truly special.

Maybe it’s the booze talkin’, but Stephen King’s IT may be the horror event of the year! The first trailer is spooky as hell and that includes what little we see of Skarsgård. The actor appears to have taken on this role with a nightmarish glee. Even the young cast looks like they perfectly fit the characters King created so long ago. Maybe I’m hyping this up too much, but the word of mouth is amazing. Yes, I’m a huge fan of the original mini-series. And yes, I’m aware of its many faults. Thankfully, we may have a feature film that finally takes full advantage of the brilliant original story. Are you ready to float? They all float down there!

Extra Tidbit: Pennywise returns to scare the crap out of audiences in IT on September 8th? When will you see IT?
