It was just yesterday that we brought news of Alcon Entertainment’s acquisition of the Oren Peli-produced CHERNOBYL DIARIES, a project that seemingly came out of nowhere. However, it has been on our radars before, just under the “untitled ghost town” heading. The fact that the film takes place next to the location of the Chernobyl disaster was certainly a new development.
With its title and location clear, the horror film has just received a release date from Warner Bros. (which distributes for Alcon Ent.): MAY 25th. Yes – of this year. Surprising move since usually release dates are handed out a year or more in advance, but Warner Bros. must see the Memorial Day frame as perfect counter-programming against the big summer blockbusters. CHERNOBYL will go up against MEN IN BLACK III and BATTLESHIP, which hits one week earlier. Expect the marketing machine to kick in quickly.
A group of friends become stranded in the eerie and desolate city of Prypiat. In the aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, nature has begun to reclaim everything. As the sun sets on this radioactive ghost town, inhuman cries cut through the night air. It seems they are not alone.
Directed by Brad Parker, CHERNOBYL DIARIES stars Jonathan Sadowski, Devin Kelley, Jesse McCartney, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Nathan Phillips, Ingrid Bolso Berdal and Dimitry Diatchenko.
