Per Variety, Reese Witherspoon is set to star in THE DEVIL’S KNOT, in which director Atom Egoyan will recount the story of the West Memphis Three. In case you’re unfamiliar, the trio refers to the three real life men who were wrongfully accused for the murder of three 8-year-old boys and subsequently spent 18 years in prison. All three men were released this past August.
Scripted by Scott Derickson and Paul Boardman (THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE) – Witherspoon will play Pam Hobbs, the mother of one of the murder victims who initially believes the trio murdered her son, but she is eventually persuaded that the three suspects are innocent and wrongly accused.
Based on Mara Leveritt’s 2003 book Devil’s Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three, filming on THE DEVIL’S KNOT begins next summer.
