Scoring news: Clint Mansell on Stoker, Alberto Iglesias on Out of the Furnace

Last Updated on July 23, 2021

It’s not often we cover compositional news, but here’s a twofold story that ought to excite more than a few…

First up is the great Clint Mansell (above), who I’m sure many of us came to know through Darren Aronofsky’s REQUIEM FOR A DREAM. Well, even though Mansell is as loyal to D.A. as Danny Elfman is to Tim Burton, it seems the Pop Will Eat Itself musician has lined up an intriguing new gig. According to The Playlist, Mansell will be scoring STOKER, Chan-wook Park’s English language debut. Pretty cool beans, if you ask us.

STOKER kicks up when:

After India’s (Wasikowska’s) father dies in an auto accident, her Uncle Charlie (Goode), who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother (Kidman). Soon after his arrival, she comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him.

Additionally, word also from The Playlist has it that Spanish composer Alberto Iglesias is set to score Scott Cooper’s gritty revenge thriller OUT OF THE FURNACE, which has itself quite the cast. Iglesias scored two of what some claim the finest scores of last year, Almodovar’s THE SKIN I LIVE IN, and the superb spy thriller TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY.

Out of the Furnace tells the story about fate, circumstance and justice. Russell (Bale) and his younger brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) live in the economically depressed Rust Belt, and have always dreamed of escaping and finding better lives. But when a cruel twist of fate lands Russell in prison, his brother is lured into one of the most violent and ruthless crime rings in the Northeast – a mistake that will almost cost him everything. Once released, Russell must choose between his own freedom, or risk it all to seek justice for his brother.

Pretty cool news here, yeah? Which collaboration are you looking forward to more: Park and Mansell or Cooper and Iglesias?

OUT OF THE FURNACE’s Zoe Saldana
