Y: The Last Man delayed indefinitely by Warner Bros., Caruso & Leterrier out?

Since its premise straddles both horror and science-fiction – in a plot that involves a plague eradicating all living things with a Y chromosome – a filmic adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan’s graphic novel Y: THE LAST MAN is something we’ve been intermittently keeping you abreast of. A couple weeks back it seemed CLASH OF THE TITANS director Louis Leterrier was the latest to be involved with the adaptation, be it for the big or small screen. Well, now it seems he’s not. And the project in general may be in trouble…

Word from ShockYa claims that Warner Bros. and New Line have agreed to shut down the project indefinitely, though no exact reason was given. Prevailing wisdom would have you believe creative differences between the studio and potential directors is the main cause. Both D.J. Caruso and Louis Leterrier have been attached in the past, but both believe the project to be far too massive to handle in a single film. Most recently, Leterrier chimed:

“[It wouldn’t work as] one large film, no. I’d love to do it as a TV show or a three-part series. I like the idea of a TV show. You take time to get to know your characters. You can introduce a lot of characters. You don’t need your three-action set pieces that you usually need for movies.”

Caruso voiced a similar sentiment months ago, citing Frank Darabont’s “The Walking Dead” as the kind of platform Y: THE LAST MAN would be best suited for. Whether or not they could match the quality of Darabont’s new series is another question altogether.
