Keanu’s Cowboy Bebop

Keanu Reeves wants to spike his hair and hit the spaceways — he’s keen on making a live-action flick based on the popular jazz-influenced gunslinging anime series COWBOY BEBOP.

The project is currently set up at Fox (where Reeves is dismantling the globe in THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL) and has an undisclosed writer already at work condensing the episodes into a functional film structure. COWBOY BEBOP takes place in a future where the lawless solar system is regulated by bounty hunters.

Reeves wants to play Spike Siegel, a reformed enforcer who leads a crew of criminal catchers. “It’s got a Western quality, a Western film noir aspect to it,” Reeves said. “It’s got so much style to it, and that’s part of its appeal. That kind of Old West, bordertown, low-tech science fiction aspect.” Which I thought was competently mined in FIREFLY/SERENITY, but Reeves thinks it’s down to having a good production designer.

See what else he has to say, including the challenge of adapting 26 episodes (and a movie) and satisfying fans of a beloved show, RIGHT HERE.
