Danny Boyle wants to shoot the Trainspotting sequel in 2016 and has two period pieces in the works

Danny Boyle

Danny Boyle is one of my favorite directors of all time. He’s one of the few filmmakers out there that can direct a film from any genre and have it be a success. If you told me Boyle was going to direct a live action My Little Pony movie I would still be the first person in line waiting for the film. I might have to headbutt a few Bronies to get to the front, but I’d be there damn it.

The Playlist had a chance to talk to the director and he has quite a bit on his plate. The big news is that a sequel to TRAINSPOTTING is definitely in the works with John Hodge (who has collaborated with Boyle multiple times) writing the screenplay. Not only that but Boyle believes he can get all of the original cast to sign on for the sequel:

This has been a long time coming. There’s always been this long term plan for TRAINSPOTTING 2 if John can produce a decent enough script, I don’t think there will be any barriers to Ewan or any of the cast coming back. I think they’ll wanna know that the parts are good so they don’t feel like they are letting anyone down.

That is a little surprising considering Ewan McGregor was still pretty sore about not being cast in THE BEACH as recently as 2011. But if the two have kissed and made up that’s good news for us. Danny Boyle also goes on to say he doesn’t want to let people down with the sequel and that’s important to him with this film:

The reason for doing it again is that people cherish the original, people remember it or have caught up with it if they never saw because they were younger. So you want to make sure you don’t disappoint people. That will be the only criteria I think.

The book that TRAINSPOTTING was based on did have a sequel called “Porno” but the film won’t exactly mirror that novel:

It’s very loosely based on ‘Porno.’ There’s a couple of things that are based on the book, but obviously we’d have to have Irvine on board.

Danny Boyle has said before that he’d like to have the sequel set twenty years after the first and it looks like that’s still his plan:

Well, the ideal time would be ‘Porno’ in 2016. Because it was 1996 when ‘Trainspotting’ came out. 20 years, it’s like wow, where did that go.

On top of that Boyle revealed he has two other films in the works, both period pieces:

We’re working on two period pieces at the moment, but they won’t be like, Downton Abbey period movies. They’re like… they’re interesting. They’ve arisen very naturally. I never thought I’d do a period piece. It’s weird the way it happens. Maybe because we’re running out of genres.

Boyle wouldn’t share any other details about those two projects, but did say one of the films will be based on an unnamed book. If your a Danny Boyle fan this is a great way to start your morning.

Boyle’s latest project, the heist film TRANCE, is out April 5, 2013.
