More details surface on the origins of Ultron

Given that the major villain of AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON has graced the cover of Entertainment Weekly, I supposed they figured that the layman would want to know more about him. They've now gone into some detail, which confirms earlier reports regarding Ultron and his drones, as well as details about a Stark party early on in the film. EW verifies that Ultron is Tony Stark's creation (as opposed to Hank Pym's) and was created to be the be-all, end-all of his "Iron Legion" which is reminiscent of Stark's drones in IRON MAN 3. Stark's plan to give the Avengers a bit of a break backfires when Ultron realizes that the key to peace is the destruction of humanity.

In Chris Evans' words:

A lot of times when Ultron starts talking, it’s beautiful. It’s really intelligent stuff. He’s out to do the things he wants to do because he’s disgusted with X, Y, and Z. You could probably sit down with Ultron and have a really intelligent conversation. He could blow your mind with his views. Yeah, and then kill you.

EW then goes into detail about a party scene at Stark tower. As extravagant as you might expect from Tony Stark, the party eventually dwindles down until just the Avengers remain. That's when the legionaries strike. Despite being seemingly unprepared, they make short work of their assailants, and Ultron addresses them. “I know you’re ‘good’ people. I know you mean well but you just didn’t think it through. There is only one path to peace . . . your extermination."

Of course, this only represents the early stages of Ultron. This sentient machine has the capacity to learn and grow, so I'm very excited to see his evolution throughout the film. The first AVENGERS was a lot of fun and showed us that Joss Whedon could assemble these heroes. Given the storyline for this film, as well as the natural progression of the characters (especially after the events of CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER), I'm very excited to see what Whedon will deliver with this installment.

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON will commence on May 1, 2015.
