2008 Oscar noms!

01.22.2009

The Oscars were announced earlier this morning in Los Angeles by Forest Whitaker and Academy President Sid Ganis. In one of the biggest shockers, THE DARK KNIGHT was shut out of all major categories save for the obvious Heath Ledger nomination. No Best Picture and not even a Best Director for Christopher Nolan. WALL-E also got the boot having to settle for a Best Animated Feature nomination. Either of those omissions would from Best Picture would be fine if they didn't pick THE READER to take its place. THE READER? Yuck. Classic Weinstein lobbying. All in all, THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON got the most nominations with 13. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE was a respectable second with 10. (For all those wondering, THE DARK KNIGHT wound up with a total of 8 nominations.)

Other surprises included Bruce Springsteen getting snubbed for his song "The Wrestler" and Kate Winslet somehow getting Best Lead Actress for THE READER even though a) she was better in REVOLUTIONARY ROAD and b) her READER performance was more of a supporting role. If there has to be a silver lining it's that Robert Downey, Jr. was nominated for his fantastic work in TROPIC THUNDER and WALL-E did get 6 total nominations. But seriously....THE READER??

AS OF MIDNIGHT TONIGHT, you will be able to vote for your favorite nominees in the Golden Schmoes, so if you didn't like the Oscar choices, make your own voices heard!

Talk about the Oscar nominations in the JoBlo forums!

The Oscars, which will be hosted by Hugh Jackman, will be presented on February 22.

OK

There are some good noms in there, not too bad of an oscar year

My pick is Slumdog for Best Picture

The Wrestler was a huge snub for best
director and picture

The Reader was a good movie, but def. not best picture

TDK...w/e it got the Supp. Actor we all knew it would get..

Definitely Amy Adams for Supp. Actress. Doubt was awesome

So there are my humble opinions...

the wrestler...wtf

After all the Juno nominations last year I lost faith in the Academy. I'm glad to see that Gran Torino didn't get anything because IMO it was very average. TDK got a lot of nominations, what are people complaining about?
But The Wrestler was by far the best film out of all the Best Picture noms and yes it got totally SNUBBED. So disappointed. Why no Best Director nomination? It had far better direction than the reader. I believe it should have gotten a Best Picture nomination over the

Aronofsky gets fucked every movie.

Another thing, I loved Slumdog, I was in the very first audience to see the final version(w/ Boyle) at TFF. Everyone LOVED it, but I still feel that The Wrestler was a far better film, deserves as much if not more nominations. Same with Benjamin Button which is among my top 15 favorite films.
Without the Wrestler, however, I believe the best of the BP nom's is Milk and I really hope it wins.

crash2?

I would understand that the Academy disliked The Dark Knight, fought it was overrated and join the on-going hip bandwagon of disliking the movie just because other people like it so much (which is stupid btw. but I am fine with it, it was always like that). But to give the movie 8(!) Noms and not give any consideration in main categories? WTF!? Did they like it that much or didn't they? Pick a side instead of prooving your prejudice towards comic-book/action movies!
Plus i have to agree with

Plus i have to agree with vdtdcut5145. The Reader... really? Is it really better than Wall-E, TDK and the Wrestler. If they had balls the list would be Wall-E, TDK, Ben Button, Wrestler and Slumdog. With Frost/Nixon as a reserve.
And I just took a quick look at the list... only 2 noms for Wall-E and no noms for Springsteen and Huey? This noms suck big time

4. Glad to see In Bruges gets the Original Screenplay nom.

5. Cool to see RDJ get the nom for Tropic Thunder.

A few good surprises with a lot of bad ones too. Pretty fucking boring Oscars this year. I thought last year's was OK. This year...ehh...

Frost/Nixon FTW

I really hope Frost/Nixon wins best picture.

Slumdog Millionaire was one of the most overrated flicks of 2008. I'm not the biggest fan of Bollywood movies, but even then, if it had a regular American setting I wouldn't really have cared for it. Seriously, someone explain to me what's so great about it.

And while you're at it, explain what's so fucking great about The Wrestler, aside from Rourke's performance, which deserves the praise it gets. The rest of the movie felt like an unfinished

The scenes with his daughter are among the most clichéd pieces of shit I've ever seen, and somehow we're supposed to give a fuck about the outcome of his relationship with her when she's only in 3 fucking scenes. I mean goddamn it, he goes to meet her, and she's almost instantly in tears, throwing a fucking hissy fit over how he "WAS NEVER THERE!"

Worst part is, I really wanted enjoy that movie, but as I said, when it was over after doing the Sopranos finale thing, I felt like I'd just watched an unfinished movie.

Wow

I was just reading an article in the Toronto Star and they were condeming this years Oscars as the worst ever.. I have to agree, Forget just the Dark Knight for one second, their are so many other movies as well that were screwed this year, where is more love for the wrestler? In Brugues I thought was always underrated... When will the academy realize and start picking some good films to nominate?

Im glad The Dark Knight wasnt nominated for best picture. It was just an average movie at best. There was way too much hype about it. I will say that I agree that Ledger's performance in it was phenominal. His Joker was the only truly great thing about the movie.

WTF

Ok, I'm happy for ledger and Rourke getting nominations. But the Reader and Slumdog getting all these nominations?? Cmon, TDK should have gotten best picture or director nods and the wrestler should have gotten a bet director nod for Aronofsky. Another failure group of nominations.

I'm a little disappointed I couldn't tell the difference between Best Picture with the Globes and Oscars. But they did nominate Robert Downey Jr. for "Tropic Thunder," which does count for something in my book.

ARE YOU FUCKIN KIDDIN ME?

OMFG! Gran Torino and Clint Eastwood was shut out of everything. Are you kidding? That was at least the second best movie of the year! Second only to TDK in my opinion. Hell Frost/Nixon is a lame ass movie and it got nods. Meanwhile the best original movie I ever watched in my life got NOTHING!! I HATE THE OSCARS!

The Wrestler got flat out SNUBBED. Once again Aronofsky's genius is neglected.

Plus, Winslet was right in Extras. Apparently if you do a WW2 movie, you get an oscar.

So the Academy once again chooses one movie to kiss Sean Penn's ass and the rest it seems they just randomly chose four movies at random. They snub Dark Knight, Wall-E, Burn After Reading, and The Wrestler and they wonder why their ratings for the broadcast go lower every year.

the AA stopped being relevant long ago , save for the much deserved wins for the Rotk blowout .

i don't even know why anyone pays much heed to this hwood insider gladhanding fest . it's not even entertaining anymore .

i do admit i would have been compelled to watch if Tdk was nommed in some more important and high profile categories .

yeah , we all know ledger will get the supporting actor award but director , picture et all were in order also .

this is yet another snooze inducing

absolutely pathetic .

Slumdog cinematography?

The fact the Slumdog got nominated for best cinematography is ridiculous - that film had some of the sloppiest digital cinematography I've seen a long-long time.

Everything else seemed to be really safe choices - some good films, no doubt. I don't think TDK was the second coming of christ like a lot of folks on here, but even I think that it was a snub not to have Nolan up for a best director nod.

The Boss got snubbed? Didn't he WIN the golden globe? AND THEY SNUBBED HIM! FARK OFF. Not to mention the Wrestler is only nominated for 2 acting Oscars. Do the Academy hate Aronofsky? It might just be me, but wasn't The Fountain snubbed the year it came out as well? I thought that needed to win SOMETHING.

And yeah, TDK should've had more, that's a given. And now there's no competition for Wall-E. Of course it was the best ANIMATED film. But it was so much better than that.

Ah well, I

The Academy's reached a new low. Even the critics are going to start looking at them as individuals with their heads up their asses!

Where the hell is The Wrestler? WHERE THE HELL?! And why couldn't The Dark Knight get more nominations. The Silence of the Lambs WON Best Picture, and it was just as commercial a film as The Dark Knight.

I was, at least, glad to see Doubt get love in the acting and writing categories. And, yes, the Tropic Thunder nomination is pleasantly surprising.

TURN OFF YOUR CAPSLOCK.

You're calling me a virgin (incorrect assumption) and you're making fun of my picture--the picture blurred itself intentionally, it was the way I took the picture and it's why I love it. There was no editing done to the picture, it's how it came out, and I thought it looked awesome.

And guess who else though The Dark Knight was high art: THE CRITICS, JACKASS. Go to Metacritic or Rotten Tomatoes and see which movies got the best reviews of the year. The Dark Knight made tons of people's Best Movie lists, not just fanboys. The fans were just happy that finally something made for them was up to par with Hollywood's greatest, and pissed that because of its source material it won't be considered for awards.

Also, I'm willing to bet you're 13 and writing from your high school detention room. Choke on a dick, please.

oscars are weenies...

overall, it's a mediocre list. some glaring omissions, some undeserved noms, very "middle of the road" and pedestrian. in other words, its "old school" hollywood, playing it safe, and age-specific, clearly.

i dont think anyone would not see that a bunch of old white guys chose this list, they need a serious infusion of youth, not in the crass "mtv generation" style, where everything is blip-vert hyper fast look i have a d d but just a general lightening up of the classic "its a period piece,

it cant be all "fanboy" noms, but it shouldnt be just "old white guy" picks, either. we need a middle ground here, the oscars for me now are not worth it, milk is the best picture of the year? who saw this epic box office disaster? a couple of dozen gay guys or whatever the film was marketed to, it made, what, a million dollars or something? how good must it be?

TDK shouldnt get nominated just because it made a bazillion dolars, either, although clearly it had to be a much more enthralling picture.

this is whats wrong. too many old white boys (i'm unfortunately one, but my tastes are way better), not enough vigor in the choosing of non-stereotypical films for nomination. they needed to step it up, not play it safe.

for me, the only category worth seeing now is best visual effects, thats 3 wise choices, with any winner being deserving...as for the rest...meh !

Slumdog millionaire was awesome and Danny Boyle will win a deserved Best Director.

I believe it was shafted for political reasons, as it represents the conservative's take on terrorism for the most part (if it had been a liberal stance Batman would have tried to make friends with the Joker...just sayin'...)

Oh and RDJ's nom is totally deserved. His performance in TT was not only hilarious but layered and dimensional. Fantastic work.

Robert Downey Jr.

I'm so glad that Robert Downey Jr. got nominated because his role in "Tropic Thunder" was amazing. I mean no one else could have pulled it off but him. So congrats to my boy Robert Downey Jr.

Also I would love to see Downey Jr. win the award but the best supporting actor trophy definitely should go to Heath Ledger for his role as the Joker in "The Dark Knight". Also I would love to see Downey Jr. win the award but the best supporting actor trophy definitely should go to Heath Ledger for his role as the Joker in "The Dark Knight". I mean he was brilliant in the movie and for that, deserves to win the award for best supporting actor. I wish my luck to Robert Downey Jr. though as well.

BTW, is anyone surprised that "Milk" got a best picture nomination? Even though it looks like a good movie, I did not think it would have enough "buzz" to grab a best movie nomination.

Also, I do not understand all the hate for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button". That movie was amazing in every aspect and I just do not understand all the hate for it. I think it deserves every award that it was nominated for and would love to see it win best picture.

If your confused about how the Academy votes, follow that link for an explanation. It will clear a few things up for all you loud mouthed, bad attitude having complainers. The Oscars suck yaaay!

And Mut, I think TDK got a nom for SFX because doing Special Effects in IMAX is fucking insane...I bet a billion dollars of someone else's money that you or your friends couldn't even comprehend the work that goes into that shit.

Staff of JoBlo

I sincerely hope that you post some sort of petition to the effect of "I pledge not to watch the academy awards this year". This petition wouldn't be because of a single given movie or performance being snubbed, rather it would be because there were so many clearly deserving movies and performances that were omitted in favor of more "academy friendly" fare. The list of nominations does not reflect the best films and performances of the year, nor the most deserving, or even the most praised, it
I sincerely hope that you post some sort of petition to the effect of "I pledge not to watch the academy awards this year". This petition wouldn't be because of a single given movie or performance being snubbed, rather it would be because there were so many clearly deserving movies and performances that were omitted in favor of more "academy friendly" fare. The list of nominations does not reflect the best films and performances of the year, nor the most deserving, or even the most praised, it is simply a predictable list of the usual academy favorites. Yes, some, even many, of the nominations are deserved, but in several instances the academy chose to clearly ignore the most worthy candidates because they decided upholding their image was more important.

The academy wonders why less and less people watch the awards each year? Well this is it. It's true, a petition might not do any good, but it will at least allow us the opportunity of voicing our dissatisfication at the situation collectively. If JoBlo were to initiate a petition then I believe it would get hundreds of signatures. If it were to "pass" the petition on to their sister sites and other similarly themed communities such a petition would see thousands, perhaps even tens of thousands of signatures. Normally this would probably have no real-world effect, however with how horrible the economy is and how absolutely desperate the networks have become for ratings, this is the perfect year to take such action. After all, if thousands of your potential viewers are pledging not to watch your show, the academy might not care, but ABC and their advertisers might.

Yes, this is an online community, and we typically think of ourselves as wielding little to no influence. However, if anyone has recognized the true significance and potential of such communities, it is Hollywood. In a few short years, sites such as this have helped revolutionize the way the way films are advertised, the way they are marketed, even the way they are seen. Sites like this are the reason why viral marketing is now a major part of many advertising campaigns when, a little over a year ago, few people even knew what the term meant. I hope JoBlo won't mind me mentioning a similarly themed site, but there is a now famous incident of a staff member of Ain't It Cool News, giving a particularly harsh review to a script for a proposed Superman film. As a direct result of the backlash that review caused in the online community the project was eventually canceled. Yes canceled. A major studio canceled what was to be one of their major tentpole films because of the reaction of the online community. That shows that our voices are significant. Heck, that shows that just how much power our voices really have when we are united in a common effort. If the online community can get the attention of Warner Bros. then it might be able to get the attention of ABC or even the academy itself. I realize that no matter how many signatures we gather it won't change how the nominees have played out this year, but if there's even the slighest chance that such a petition could help prevent a similar occurence in the future then I believe it's worth a shot.

I know that this would be appreciated by many of your readers, including myself. Please at least consider it.

im still trying to understand why exactly did the Academy reduce the nomination for song of the year ? why three exactly; especially after SLUMDOG was given two slots. I believe previous years at least contained four or five songs and only recently has multiple songs from one film been included. No that it matters but FUCK THIS SHIT !!

Mickey Rourke and Amy Adams were the 2 best performances of the nominees. I hated The Dark Knight, glad to see it's not up for best picture, directing, or best original screenplay

I'm glad to see Mickey Rourke and Amy Adams nominated, those were 2 excellent performances. I think the movies those performances were in were both better than any of the 5 best picture nominees.

I find it amusing that Michael Shannon from Revolutionary Road is nominated in the same category as Heath Ledger since they both gave the EXACT SAME PERFORMANCE! There was nothing special about either of those performances, to me they were just cases of actors going way over the top and

There was nothing special about either of those performances, to me they were just cases of actors going way over the top and showboating without much skill involved. And neither performance felt very authentic, I was constantly aware that they were acting.

As for The Dark Knight not getting nominated for best picture, directing, or best original screenplay, I'm happy. Christopher Nolan is my favorite director but I HATED The Dark Knight. His non-Batman movies are so much better in my opinion, so it's annoying to me that THIS is the most hyped and popular of all his films.

Way to go Oscar Committee, your gonna drive away any younger audiences by not listening to the ticket-buying public and critics and putting up Dark Knight for best picture, best director, screenplay, ect.

I don't think I made my point very clearly. The last animated movie to crack the "Best Picture" category was Beauty and the Beast. I understand they've made this Best Animated Movie category, but it's nuts that Wall-E has to only be able to win that when it was clearly better than some if not all the Best Picture choices this year. I share all the feelings of those below me. The academy is full of a bunch of pricks who, since 1998, have refused to acknowledge the movies that go past entertainment value and become shared cultural experiences. Back in the day, movies like Braveheart, Titanic, Schindler's List, etc., won the award not because they were the best films necessarily, but more because the movies were culturally significant events that deserved to go down in history as being THE movie of that year. This goes to show that the voters are still not with the times. Every once in a while they actually get and reward a fantasy genre film but they are very rare. I was not expecting TDK to win but at least a nom. That is not alot to ask for esp since the other noms are no greater than TDK. The Reader? REALLY?!? I would have accepted The Wrestler over TDK but not The Reader. Cmon?!!? It hardly made any critics top 10 list. Although, this finally gives me the excuse to stop watching the

I'm not going to lie, I'm actually really happy (overall) with how the acting nominations turned out. I mean I would've ditched Kate Winslet for Sally Hawkins who has won almost every major critic's award this year, and I was really hoping Brendan Gleason would be nominated for In Bruges, but 18/20 for the actors noms ain't bad.

However, what is bad are the nominees for Best Picture. In fact they are so incredibly bad that it just ruins everything. Yes, EVERYTHING! The world will never be

I mean really, they're not the best films of the year, they're not the most praised, they're not the most popular, they're the most "academy-ish", and that's it.

Not Surprised

Is everyone really that surprised that TDK didn't get nominated for Best Picture? I love that movie (it was easily my favorite of 2008) but the Academy would never nominate a comic book movie, no matter how good it is. They'll always find some other dumb little movie (like The Reader) that they believe is more "artistic". I hate it but I'm definitely not surprised. It's sad Nolan didn't get nominated either. He did a great job directing. And what's up with Robert Downey, Jr. for his role

How is it that in every magazine/newpaper article I read, Dark Knight was listed in the top 5 or 10 movies of the year by critics, but no best pic or director nomination from the academy? Of course, the academy only nominates end-of-the year releases, and then pushes up the date of the show (2/22/09). Just in time for all the nominees to get a wide release from anywhere besides LA or NY. What a coincidence!

And I'm not saying the nominee's are bad movies, but I just wish the academy

And I'm not saying the nominee's are bad movies, but I just wish the academy wasn't biased against movies not released during awards season. (In bruges & TDK).

Also, when a movie loved as much by critics (see reviews) and the public (see box office), than the movie should at least warrent a best pic nomination. Look at LOTR, Titanic, Godfather. I didn't expect Dark Knight to win, but at least a nomination.

I am very disappointed this year with the Academy. Ive been seeing a lot of posts saying Dark Knight isn't best picture nomination worthy but if anyone was following the other awards, Dark Knight was nominated for best picture many times and in a few cases it won.

Would it have won this year? Prob not but Titanic was also nominated at the time and if you look back at it now, was it really that serious? L.A. Confidential was by far superior in my opinion. Titanic is sort of in the same

And another advantage for Dark Knight being nominated, would def be the viewers. The awards need viewers and im not saying a movie should be nominated just to have viewers (Paul Blart best picture next year?), Im just saying when you have a film that is universally praised and that brought something new to a genre that felt used up like a tampon then that means something.

As for the best actress category. With Winslet being nominated for the Reader, I think its Hathaway's year.

Nice to see Downey in the supporting actor category. Doesn't matter anyway because its Ledgers.

Rourke vs Penn for actor. Hopefully, its Rourke.

Best picture and director are prob going to Slumdog and Boyle.

Bruce was def fucked over for song. Could have gave him the second slot. But that O'Saya song from Slumdog is great too.

Gran Torino?!

WTF?! Clint Eastwood gets NOTHING for what I believe to be his best movie since Unforgiven?
As for TDK, I'm glad Heath got nominated, but it certainly deserved best adapted screenplay and original score noms. I would have loved to have seen best director and picture nominations, too, but didn't really expect it to win in either category. I hated Benjamin Button... it was an overblown piece of pretentious crap (IMHO) but there it is in almost every major category. I haven't seen The Reader, but

Seriously...

The Dark Knight didn't deserve a best movie or director nomination. While I love it as much as anyone else, because it's a superhero movie, there is a bunch of prerequesite cliche or cheesy scenes that take away from the movie's quality (ex: the whole stupid cell phone triangulation thing, not necessary but looks kinda stupid). You should be happy it got 8 nominations! That's a big deal.

If The Reader is not worthy of the nom (haven't seen it), than the real travesty is WALL-E. That was by

Also, while a funny performance in a pretty funny but overrated movie, Downey has no business being nominated for supporting actor. It wasn't that great of a performance and I feel someone more deserving got shafted, like Ralph Fiennes in In Bruges.

Glad to see TDK didn't get the Best Picture nomination. It was over-hyped and trite - definitely not as good as people make it out to be. In a few years more people will come to their senses once they've adjusted to their rose-coloured glasses. And I laugh at people justifying that it was snubbed simply because it's about Batman and superhero movies are always direspected. No, it's because the movie wasn't all that great.

Also not surprised to see Ledger get a nod for his overacting,

Also not surprised to see Ledger get a nod for his overacting, though. It's too bad. Had he lived he'd have seen nothing.

Hopefully Frost/Nixon wins big.

3 things that I am disappointed from this year's Oscar nominations:
1. No "The Dark Knight" for Best
Picture/Adapted screenplay
2. No Clint Eastwood for Best Actor
(Darn!)
3. Why Best Makeup and Best Original
Song noms are only cut down to 2-3?

Well, at least Iron Man got nominated for something.

jayrizzo, I'm not picking a fight or anything, but Penn in "Milk" isn't like his stuff in other movies. It's the most I've ever liked him in anything. He's actually good this time, without being ridiculously showy.

TDK SNUBBED!! but....

TDK was snubbed that was the best movie of te year but the gaywads at the academy couldn't vote for a "comic book" movie! Althoughit was awesome to see In Bruges get nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

not surprised

there was no way tdk would get best pic nom but i'm still disappointed with a lot of the nominations. it just seems like a lot of these nominations are generic like ben button or mandatory like sean penn. not too many are really great or rememberable movies, they're just trying to be. i'll wait for the golden schmoes

Yeah, TDK was a blockbuster, but what the hell would you call TITANIC? It's hard NOT to call the highest grossing movie of all time a blockbuster, yet how many Oscars did it win?

I bet the Academy sees another all time low in ratings again this year. They had a chance to get off their high horses and acknowledge that there ARE good movies out there other than the typical end of the year Oscar Bait but I guess they're going to continue to be a bunch of stubborn fools.

I really hoped the Academy wouldn't be dicks and leave the Dark Knight off of Best Picture just because it was about Batman. Damn them.

But I'm pretty satisfied with all of the other noms. I really, really hope I'm wrong, but I can see them robbing Heath and giving best supporting actor to Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

I don't wanna focus on the bad here, because my favorite movie of the year (Slumdog) made it in, and so did RDJ, but I've seen all five of the nominees, and "The Reader" is awful. I hadn't heard any hype or anything for it, I just watched it, and it's terrible. It's heavy-handed, moves at an awkward snail's pace, and the first hour is just gratuitous sex scenes, which would be fine, except Winslet goes the "I'm going to not be attractive for awards" route. And I hate to say it, but though "TDK" or "Wall-E" would've lived the dream by getting nominated, they were never going to make it, realistically. Just read a pretentious East/West coast critic talking about "TDK" and you'll see what I mean.

Wow. The Academy has unfortunately made it a tradition to snub the best film of the year. It's getting less and less surprising every time they do it. I'm really surprised to see "The Reader" up for Best Picture. It was good, not great. Without TDK up there, there is not really any competition for Best Picture, therefore there's not going to be any suspense. Can't we just give it to Slumdog now? And why the fuck is Downey Jr. up for Best Supporting Actor? That's just an insult to the other

Nolan also got F'd in the A for a director nomination, so Boyle won't have much trouble taking that. Glad to see "In Bruges" got at least one nomination. Looks like it actually has a chance at getting it. Also looks like there is a chance of a film getting more than five Oscars wins this year. Can't recall that happening since ROTK won 11 back in '04.

being a dick a few posts below bashing The Dark Knight with an icon of the Wolverine movie I promise you it will not be half the movie TDk is. Yea I agree it shouldn't have been nominated however if you think a movie like Wolverine looks like any form of the word good then I don't know how you can not like a summer popcorn flick if you think that's what TDK is. Clint Eastwood not being up for best actor I'd say is the biggest disappointment. Hell anyone who laughs or bashes this site about The

I'm Sorry

Yea the Reader might not be that good and The Dark Knight was probably better but Gran Torino should have gotten the nom not the Dark Knight or the Wrestler. And Leo is not a good actor? WTF are you on? Honestly he's better than 90% of the actors today and almost always turns in a solid performance besides the Avatar and please someone tell me what was so damn great about Brad Pitt and Ben Button because I checked my phone 3 times during that film even though Fincher is probably my favorite

Glad to see 'Slumdog' get what it deserves, Boyle deserves a directing Oscar and this is definitely his masterpiece so far. TDK got robbed, yes. I don't think it deserved to win best picture, but it was good enough to get a nomination. But that's life. I am, however, EXTREMELY happy that Martin McDonough got a nod for his excellent but little-known film 'In Bruges.' I love the film, and i'd honestly forgotten that it came out in 2008, it felt like longer ago. Hope he wins.

Boo frickin hoo, TDK didn't get best pic or director. Cry me a f***ing river.
It's up for 8 Oscars. That in itself is impressive for a superhero movie. So quit whining.

I am very glad to see Wall-E did quite well, with 6 nominations (!!!), including original score, which I thought was fantastic. And Benjamin Button with 13 noms? Wow. I am glad to see Fincher finally get a directing nomination. Personally, I really loved that movie. But that's just me.

At least Ledger got the nomination. And why are there only three best original song nominations? Little person from Synecdoche, New York should of been nominated and Philip Seymour Hoffman should of gotten a best actor nom for that movie as well. He played a much better role than in Doubt. have any of you actually SEEN the reader? it's a good film. the wrestler should have been nominated instead of it, but it's a good movie. if the dark knight had had more moments with the joker sticking his head out the window, it would have been oscar material. that said, it was just a summer blockbuster, not best picture of the year.

However...

I still can't understand why this f#cking "Reader" movie is so popular? It's getting lackluster reviews and I've heard the direction is pretty crappy. The only good thing I hear is Kate Winslet so why don't they just give her a nomination and that's it.

Now that I think of it, I do wonder why "The Reader" has all the big nominations when it clearly didn't have the caliber, popularity and success like "The Dark Knight" did. So I take back my previous statement, TDK should have been nominated

the snobs prevail

yeah, I'm going to call bullshit on the lack of TDK. The academy could have gone for a film that was a gigantic hit with audiences and was almost universally liked and had received very rave reviews. But no, what does the academy do? They nominate "The Reader" a movie with a rating of 60%! at rottentomatoes (TDK had 94%) about a young boy who develops a romantic relationship through poetry with an older woman - who just happens to be a former Nazi death camp guard.... can you say self-important

This is exactly like that "important" gay priest film featured in the beginning of Tropic Thunder, exactly. A boring pretensious film that no one truly enjoys watching but pretends to like because it involves "serious" themes - give me a break.

I laugh at them, GET OVER YOURSELF! The film was a fun watch, I own it and have seen it several times, but I can name off the top of my head 5 films that I, not the academy, thought was better than the Dark Knight, and it doesn't include The Reader, Frost/Nixon, or Milk.

I stopped coming to this site because of all the dick sucking for Dark Knight, and all the loathing for Indy 4. After I saw the Noms this morning I had to come back to rub it in their faces. If you thought the film should have won, good for you, I don't care, but I will laugh at you.

THE FILM WAS NOT AS GOOD AS EVERYONE IS MAKING IT OUT TO BE! IT HAS MULTIPLE FLAWS THAT ARE OVERLOOKED BY PEOPLE! DO YOU WANT ME TO NAME THEM FOR YOU?

Not Surprised

Not surprised that TDK or Nolan were left out. Academy doesn't usually pick summer studio flicks for its "prestige" awards. It IS nominated, and the one person who truly deserved the nom got it. But I have to agree with gayzilla, he's not a lock. Though I think he will win, it's not a slam dunk. Kate Winslet is an Academy darling; she's like Meryl Streep: she'll always get nominated.
Nice to see Taraji Henson get a nom. Boston Legal alums represent!

Great list!

C'mon people, I love "The Dark Knight" as well but I knew it wouldn't get nominated for "Best Picture" or "Best Director". Instead, it got 8 NOMINATIONS in the technical categories and Heath Ledger is guaranteed to win. I'm EXTREMLEY happy with this! You guys really need to chill cause it's going to win most of them anyway.

Can't wait for Oscar night! I do wish though that Clint would have received a nomination for Best Actor in "Gran Torino".

OH, AND THEY NEVER NOMINATE UNWORTHY BUT TRENDY FILMS. NO, I'M LAUGHING BECAUSE YOU ACTUALLY THINK A FILM NOT BEING NOMINATED MEANS IT IS NOT A GOOD FILM!

I can't do that anymore. It's only fun for a while. But, I still think it is funny that someone would be happy to see a film not nominated because of some delusion

I can't do that anymore. It's only fun for a while. But, I still think it is funny that someone would be happy to see a film not nominated because of some delusion that a film not being nominated automatically disqualifies it from high praise (not the same as "worship" by the way). I see a lot of movies on there that were expected, though I do think there were some good choices.

But, while I have not seen The Wrestler, I am surprised to see it shut out in most categories. Where's the outcry here? No best director, screenplay, or even picture? I think there should be a rule that if a film has to actors nominated in major categories, the director should also get consideration. Who do they think directed those great performances? What does the academy have against Darren Aronofsky? Since The Reader probably doesn't belong there, why no The Wrestler?

Wait, according to Fuzzyfoot, since it didn't get nominated, it MUST BE A BAD FILM AND NOT PRAISE (er . . .) WORSHIP WORTHY! See how well that logic works?

Another year just proving that they don't know shit.

And to willhunter, there was no Animated Feature category back when Beauty and the Beast won. That's why the Animated Feature category was created.

Not shocked about TDK

But, I am shocked that Wall-E didn't get a best picture nod. It's one like every other group/society's best pic award, how then does it not even get nominated here? How is Beauty and the Beast still the only animated film to ever crack that category and frankly, compared to Toy Story, Monsters, Inc., and Wall-E - it really sucks.

No Dark Knight (awesome!)!! ...but The Reader?!

The Oscars never really pick or nominate the "best" pictures (CRASH is almost easily the worst movie ever to win), but at very least I'm happy they didn't nominate the massively overrated The Dark Knight or Chris Nolan. One less argument to have with delusional fanboys (you decide if you're one of those people... the movie isn't good).

The Reader was bland and by the numbers... that slot could have easily been filled by a more deserving choice.

I like how TDK is nominated for every technical award there is, but it isn't good enough for the rest of it.......but TECHNICALLY it is a great film..uh huh.

I hate when people talk about "the Academy" like it's a single entity, but I'm going to do it, They just shot themselves in the foot. Oh well. And now the supporting actor category actually looks like a race.
