A ton of concept art for Tom Cruise’s Oblivion; first trailer to premiere in front of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey!

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Get ready for some epic sci-fi in these pieces of concept art from Joseph Kosinski‘s OBLIVION, starring Tom Cruise.  A few of the images we’ve already seen, but the  majority are totally new and rather impressive.  I’ve been intrigued by this project from the get-go, but didn’t realize it would be so epic in scale.  Kosinski, who last directed TRON: LEGACY, has insinuated it would be more of a character piece, and that may be true, but it still takes place on a massive scale judging by these images.  From the barren, ravaged surface of Earth to the skies and to the stars, it seems that this will be a space-and-time spanning sci-fi extravaganza.  I have no problem with that, either.

OBLIVION is based on a graphic novel idea by Kosinski and Arvid Nelson, with a script by Kosinski, William Monahan, Karl Gajdusek, and Michael Arndt (the upcoming STAR WARS VII).

Here’s the official synopsis:

Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind. Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete. Living and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

OBLIVION, directed by Joseph Kosinski, and starring Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Zoe Bell, and Melissa Leo is slated to hit theaters on April 19, 2013.  The trailer will premiere this month, just ahead of THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY
