Aaron Taylor-Johnson confirms meeting with Marvel and Joss Whedon about Quicksilver role in The Avengers sequel

Jul. 29, 2013by:

The slow crawl of reveals is starting to take shape since Joss Whedon "announced" the title of his THE AVENGERS sequel, the aptly titled THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. The director has also confirmed that Scarlet Witch aka Wanda Maximoff and Quicksilver aka Pietro Maximoff will be in the follow-up, but thus far no casting announcements have been made. Rumors have swirled that Saoirse Ronan was a contender for Scarlet Witch and Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been linked to Quicksilver for some time. During his promo interviews for KICK-ASS 2, the actor has now confirmed that he is at least in talks with both Marvel and Joss Whedon to portray the enigmatic son of Magneto, saying via Collider:

“I feel really flattered and honored that they came to me for that role.  I think he’s an interesting character and we’re just gonna keep going into that.  I sat down with Joss, I think he’s awesome, I sat down with the guys at Marvel and they’re also great; I think it’d be interesting.”

Speaking to MTV, Taylor-Johnson elaborated more about the character, which makes me think that he's seen some aspect of the script or been given a rundown, possibly by Whedon, saying:

"I think when it comes around and you're asking about 'Avengers 2' and Quicksilver and things like that, the thing is to think about that he's an abandoned child. Him and his sister are abandoned, they live in Eastern Europe. And if that's something that you can make work, then there's always... you gotta have something that you can relate to. So when it comes to that, then it's enjoyable. So I don't really care what it is you know."

On Whedon, Taylor-Johnson seemed rather enthused, stating:

"Oh man, [Joss Whedon] is awesome! He's a real dude and I love what he did with the first Avengers. He had a real though task to deal with and I think he put up brilliantly."

Although Taylor-Johnson isn't confirmed for the role of Quicksilver, I'd say it's about in the bag at this point. Negotiations may still be underway, but it would seem silly for the actor not to take the role if offered it. After the success of KICK-ASS and the likely success of both KICK-ASS 2 and Gareth Edwards GODZILLA, it would be a natural progression to superstardom for the actor to jump into arguably the biggest superhero movie on the horizon (okay, okay, it's got some competition from SUPERMAN/BATMAN, but still...).

Do you think Taylor-Johnson can keep up with the role of Quicksilver?

THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON is set to debut on May 1, 2015. Taylor-Johnson will next be seen in KICK-ASS 2, opening on August 16, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: Who do you think will be the better Quicksilver: Aaron Taylor-Johnson or Evan Peters (in X-Men: Days of Future Past)?

Tidbit

Not sure... Evan Peters is unproven but he's really good in both seasons of American Horror Story, although both of his characters have been really intense, so who knows how he'll do with a more subdued role

I'm still puzzled on why Whedon has chosen mutants to be in this when he can't even call them that. Unless this is going to be just the tip of something bigger for Avengers 3. Are they even going to connect that Magneto is their father ?

I'm not sure why you are getting thumbed down. I completely agree with you.

They are developing a solo Ant-Man movie, using Ultron as the Avengers 2 villain, and are adding a male and a female character to the Avengers roster. So who are they adding? Hank and Janet. Wrong!! Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. WTF.

Without being able to connect or identify with the mutant side of their universe, how does that even make sense? I'm sure they will be written into the story just fine. But

In the comics, the Scarlet Witch was the only Avenger who was consistently able to go toe to toe against Ultron. No, really, she was that powerful in the comics. Of course, they can avoid using the word "mutant" if they say that she was using "the powers she was born with" and likewise Quicksilver would be using "the power he was born with". My guess is that they don't know who their father was, which was the case in the comics themselves for over a decade.

Martinphipps, thanks for clarifying that.

wwallace, I'm sure Whedon will use a joke or two in Avengers 2 how the rest of the team can't call them mutants

Yeah, that's interesting.... I recently re-read the graphic novel "Marvels" which was awesome by the way, and they sort of talk about this. Basically up until the X-Men all the characters were science fiction based, with the exception of Thor and Namor who were just straight up a gods(well... I don't know what the heck an Atlantean is), but all the others began as humans and either came across radiation, cosmic rays, radioactive spiders, robot suits, etc... and became 'super'. But then the x-men came along as always being essentially born with powers, and it caused the whole human panic. So that'd be interesting to see if they bring that into the mix, but with the x-men, and I guess the term 'mutant' belonging to Fox who knows how they plan to do it.

Why can't two different actors can play the same character in two different films..I'm down with it...take it as two different illustrations in two different comic books by two different artists

...FOX's XMEN is in a different universe than the Marvel's

Yes, although I suspect the X-Men exist in the Marvel cinematic universe. I'm not sure if the Avengers exist in Fox's version.

Purely from the X-Men point of view Id rather both siblings not be in this. As a character outside of its X-men links, I think I'll hold judgment until I see the movie - I mean how much screen time can they all get?

They, like their father, will have been from Eastern Europe. Magneto could have gotten married immediately after the war and had the twins but he may have been to young (and too committed to revenge against Shaw) to have been able to raise them. In the comics, Magda ran away from Eric in fear, taking the children with her. He never found out what happened to them, not until Avengers 165-167 in which he learned that the twins grew up to be Wanda and Pietro. (They were adopted by

Quicksilver in Avengers 2 may not fit this timeline, age wise. Then again, in the actual comics they were born after the war and that would mean they'd be in their sixties now. We may have to assume that all mutants age slower than homosapiens.

interested to see how quicksilver plays out.

i feel like live-action movies still haven't done super-speed running that well. it's always looked at little awkward. i'm curious to see how it'll look in action.

He would be a solid choice for Quicksilver and would bring much depth to the role. He was solid in Savages and Anna Karenina and am very much looking forward to what he brings to Godzilla.
