Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern is headed to the big screen

In the never-ending search for the next hot franchise, Warner Bros. has taken it upon itself to grab hold of yet another literary series to adapt into what they hope is a long series of films. The house of HARRY POTTER AND THE HOBBIT will now tackle the Dragonriders of Pern by author Anne McCaffrey. I’ve never heard of the series but I imagine it’s ripe for the picking if they’re looking for some longevity; it’s one of the biggest selling sci-fi series with 22 volumes.

"Dragonflight," the first in the series of novels published in 1968, follows an elite group of warriors who take to the skies on the backs of giant, fire-breathing, telepathic dragons to save the wondrously exotic planet of Pern from a terrifying airborne menace.

You know how it goes: the books lead to a movie or franchise, which leads to the books being re-released with new covers stained with the "now a major motion picture" tag, all accompanied by toys and videogames. THE HOBBIT series will end later this year, so don’t be surprised to hear more about this project as we get closer to saying goodbye to Lake-town (watch the new trailer).

Have you read the series? How will it adapt to the screen?

On the topic of great, unused source material...

...why hasn't Hollywood tapped any of these?
- Artemis Fowl (Colfer)
- Gaea trilogy (Varley)
- Landover (Brooks)
- Xanth (Anthony) at least the first few books before he got so weird

I liked Raymond Feist's Riftwar Saga.

Highly sexualized series...

I started to read the first 6 books as part of the Sci Fi book club back in the 80's, but was bored to tears by book 1. Many years later I slogged through all 6 and the one overwhelming fact that I remember about the books is the overtly sexualized nature of the books. I'm pretty sure they are going to completely remove that to make this more PG-13. Not really the series I would've picked, but kudos to Hollywood for NOT remaking something.

Yes, Still Works

As long as they stay away from Todd MacCaffrey's (Annes's son) work, & stick to the first three books, this will work fine. I agree that the sci fi portion did no work well; Anne was not too grounded in the hard sciences. The fantasy aspect, however, will be visually stunning. I'm dying to see how they handle the telepathic link between dragon and rider, what between looks like, and, of course, dragon mating!

Tired

I read the books as a kid and they were great, but believe the plot may be 'too much' to think about for the audience of today.
We'll see. Anybody else getting tired of seeing gigantic armies facing off against one another - right after the hero's speech of course? It's just. to exciting anymore.

It'll need some work

It's a great, if somewhat dated, series (as the article mentioned, the first book came out in 1968). I've read most of them and I thought it was great as long as it stayed in the fantasy realm. As soon as it turned into science fiction, I lost interest.

Seriously????

The single BEST book series I've ever read (sadly, only the first two were of that quality.....the third was a step down and I never bothered to move to four).

Not sure it'll work though.....the medieval descendants of space travelers fighting alien plant-life on the back of time traveling/teleporting dragons? I can't even imagine how they could make that palatable for the masses.....
