Arrival is returning to theaters with bonus footage and commentary

Yesterday the Oscar nominations were announced, and though LA LA LAND continued to dominate with a record-tying 14 nominations, two movies came in second with an exceptional eight noms: MOONLIGHT and ARRIVAL. The latter has been lauded by critics and fans and stands as one of the few sci-fi films to break into the major awards. If you haven’t seen it you should count your lucky stars Paramount is giving you a chance to redeem yourself.

The studio announced in a press release that the movie will be re-released in theaters on Friday, January 27, most likely in celebration of the movie’s nominations. However, this is no ordinary re-release, as it will feature eight minutes of never-before-seen footage with commentary from Amy Adams and director Denis Villeneuve, as well as a behind-the-scenes look with them, Jeremy Renner and more. The release reads this content can only be seen in theaters, but chances are it could make its way onto the Blu-ray that comes out February 14.

The movie stunned with eight nominations yesterday, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. However, Adams did not receive a nomination as expected, causing uproar as one of the biggest snubs of the morning. While expressing gratitude for his over his and the movie's nominations, Villeneuve commented on her absence saying:

I’m deeply disappointed for Amy. She was the soul of this movie. For me, it was a given! She had the movie on her shoulders, she’s the one who made it happen. It’s a strange feeling to celebrate and feel sad at the same time.

Truly, it sucks Adams didn’t get the recognition she deserved from the Academy (while Meryl Streep won a record 20th nomination), as this was one of her best and most important roles to date. But oh well, at least the movie on the whole is recieveing ample praise, which is nothing to scoff at. The additional content sounds terrific and seeing it in theaters is like icing on the cake. I doubt this will be a nationwide release, so keep an eye out at your local theater to see if you can catch it. Also, does Streep get a free sandwhich or something now?

ARRIVAL returns to theaters this Friday, on Digital HD January 31 and Blu-ray February 14.
