Ben Affleck will team up with Geoff Johns for standalone Batman film

07.09.2015

The rumour of Ben Affleck taking the helm of a standalone Batman film has popped up now and again ever since the actor was cast as the Dark Knight, but according to Deadline it may very well be true. The outlet has heard that Ben Affleck will team up with Geoff Johns, DC Comics’ chief creative officer, to co-write a standalone Batman film which Affleck will direct and star in once he completes his adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel "Live By Night."

Affleck will begin shooting LIVE BY NIGHT this November and once he finishes up with that, production on the standalone Batman film would start up. At the moment there's no release date for the film, but if Warner Bros. wants to get to it as quickly as they seem to, some of the other DC films may have to get out of the way. The film would deal with the Batman character after the events of BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE and the first JUSTICE LEAGUE film, which would potentially place it sometime in 2018. At the moment THE FLASH is set for a March 28, 2018 release with AQUAMAN following on July 27, 2018. There's either going to be some rescheduling or we may be in for three DC cinematic films that year. Affleck and Johns are said to have developed a good working relationship and will likely turn in a script by the end of the summer.

Ben Affleck will make his debut as Batman in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE which will see release on March 23, 2015. Warner Bros. kicks off their big Comic-Con panel this Saturday which is sure to contain plenty of DC Cinematic Universe details, so make sure to keep checking JoBlo for all that SDCC goodness!

Will be interesting to see what style Affleck will bring to not only Batman but a comic book film in general, it seems to fit the tone WB & DC are aiming at with these films. Like others have said it really depends on how BVS turns out.

If they're going for a 2018 release, I say scratch The Flash movie altogether.

If they actually cast Tyrese Gibson as John Stewart, keep the Flash movie and scratch Green Lantern.

All about this.

I think the WB has already screwed their so-called cinematic universe (broadly misunderstanding Superman, miscasting WW, Aquaman, and the Flash, while making a Suicide Squad movie that has a Joker with the tat "damaged" on his forehead). That being said, I think Affleck will KILL as Batman. I've said this from the beginning. With him writing and directing, holy shite, we might get the best Batman movie ever made.

cool! Will this mark the first time a director has starred in a super hero film as the lead character as well?

I'm just glad we will be spared yet another origin story with Affleck pushing 50... we know who Batman is by now... that is the one thing I'm not necessarily looking forward to with another Spider-Man reboot... yet another retelling of the origin story that we've seen some incarnation of twice already.

I want to like the DC cinematic universe, but I freaking hated Man of Steel and 95% of what I've seen from Batman vs. Superman and Suicide Squad do not inspire confidence in me. But if this is true, holy heck, then this will have replaced Civil War as my most anticipated superhero film. I really wish we could see more mainstream, critically acclaimed directors get a shot at superhero films. I get that it's not everyone's cup of tea but everybody wins when you have top-tier talent involved and

We all knew this was going to happen, and we're all better off for it too. Affleck is a phenomenal director, and easily the best director they now have slated for any of their projects. Aquaman was probably the movie I was looking forward to the most of the DCCU lineup (despite Hal Jordan GL being my favorite DC hero), but now this just shot to the top of the list. Flash can lick my sweaty nuts with that shitbag Miller. Wonder Woman looks like a toothpick. But I love Cavill, Afflack as Bats,

I don't know. I'd like to see BATMAN V SUPERMAN first to get to know this version of the character. That way, I would know if another BATMAN solo movie is necessary.

I like what I'm seeing from the DC Cinematic Universe

It seems, based on set photos from both this and Suicide Squad, DC is letting each director put their own spin in the characters which allows for a more colorful and unique collective universe. I'm happy to hear Affleck is opening up to more "fun" projects. I'm very hopeful DC takes over Comic Con since Marvel won't be present.

After directing three incredible films, I can't wait to see what he could do with his own Batman film (especially considering some of the excellent storytelling and action scenes he helmed in The Town).

I wish it had come out in March of this year. :P

This is honestly the best Hollywood news I read this week. I really hope this will work as I have great trust for Affleck as a director, and Geoff Johns, while his work can sometimes be a mixed bag post-New 52, his run on JSA and Green Lantern were awesome, not to mention that he wrote some of the best episodes of Flash and Smallville.
