Bruce Willis and M. Night Shyamalan reteam for romantic drama Labor of Love

01.29.2014by:

M. Night Shyamalan may have used up all of his get out of Movie Jail free cards with fans after making AFTER EARTH, but Hollywood is giving him another shot. To try and boost the potential for his next film, Shyamalan is going back to the beginning and getting UNBREAKABLE and THE SIXTH SENSE star Bruce Willis to appear in LABOR OF LOVE.

Deadline is reporting that the screenplay for LABOR OF LOVE pre-dates Shyamalan's directorial efforts. It was sold to 20th Century Fox in 1993 but never got made since Shyamalan was an unknown commodity. That is right around the same time that Shyamalan made his writing/directing debut with the film PRAYING WITH ANGER starring Rosie O'Donnell. Unlike all his films since, LABOR OF LOVE will not be a genre film.

Willis will play a Philadelphia book store owner who loses the love of his life in a tragic accident. Never big on words, he becomes haunted by the notion that he never properly told his wife how much he loved her. Since she once asked if he would walk across the country for her, he decides to show her posthumously just how much he did love her. That trek starts from Philadelphia to Pacifica, CA, which was her favorite place.

If the script pre-dates Shyamalan's ongoing attempts to replicate THE SIXTH SENSE and his magical twist endings, maybe it will be a quality story without all the bells and whistles. For some reason, I continue to hold out hope that Shyamalan was not a one-trick pony and can replicate his early success. Casting Willis may be a last ditch effort, but with this being so different than his other films, I am willing to give it a shot.

maybe Willis dies on the way there but his spirit walks on and will get there in the end only to have Pacifica be closed for repairs, but he takes a fat security guard with one giant arm hostage and makes him die from tree spores. that would be better than what he has planned.

Rosie O'Donnell did not star in Praying with Anger, you are mixing that movie with his second film, Wide Awake. And for those who crapping on Bruce Willis, I get that A Good Day to Die Hard was such a major letdown but Willis is still capable of being great. You are forgetting that some of his recent movies also include Looper and Moonrise Kingdom.

How many strikes will it take before this guy is completely blacklisted from Hollywood? Hasn't anyone in Hollywood figured out that the odds of him striking gold again are slim to none? He had two really good films, but everything afterwards was either inconsistent or completely horrible. The latter seems to better define his last three or four efforts...Re-teaming with Willis for a cliche sounding romantic drama feels like another desperate attempt to get back in favor with the masses. I just

I just can't fathom why anyone would want to continue to fund this guy's career, it's dead. That's the real twist here, he just hasn't figured it out yet.

Maybe I'm just desperate for something to be optimistic about, but who knows? Maybe this will be just the change of pace that they both need to put out some decent work. We can hope...

I lost any respect for M. Night Shyamalan

after the hatchet job he did with THE LAST AIRBENDER so AFTER EARTH was merely the s**t topping on the turd cake.

Bruce Willis has clearly reached his sell-by date as well (just ask Kevin Smith and Sylvester Stallone) so these two together sounds like Razzie bait to me.

Don't read a lof screenplays, but I've read that one.

It was fucking horrible.

This will suck. Don't get any hopes up, this isn't 1998-2002 Bruce Willis anymore either.

No twist in this one

I read a draft online many years ago. My only problem is that the media gets involved, tracking his journey, and make into a hero. That doesn't sound too much like Forrest Gump, does it? Of course not.

When I read it, I thought R.D. Call should play the lead. He was usually a cop or a gangster in his films, a real no-nonsense type. Could've been a good fit for this since, in the script, the character's wife would complain about how closed-off he seems most of the time. But I'm sure

But I'm sure Bruce will be fine, since he'd probably rather do this than more action movies.

Wasn't the script written before the movie Forrest Gump was released? The article reports that the script was sold to 20th Century Fox in 1993 and Forrest Gump came out in 1994. Besides, in what world would a man who walks across America as an act of love not be on the news? The media loves stories like that.

If I had read this prior to seeing After Earth, I would be cautiously interested. But after catching After Earth on Starz, holy shit, talk about a filmmaking that didn't give a crap about what he does attempting to make. He needs to be banned for a few years...

Shamylan wasn't a one trick pony, he was a three trick pony

And he's proven time and time again that that's all the tricks he had in him.

Finally!

This is a movie Night wrote a long, long time ago. I remember reading the script around when Unbreakable came out. Even then it was an old script.

Really looking forward to seeing this.

I will only fully support this if Willis is allowed to rock his beard from 'What Just Happened' and if he gets to act the character as if its a human being, like, ironically, his voice over work for Look Who's Talking.

MNS

Maybe M. N. S will rekindle that spark with Bruce that jolted his career......

Also James Bourne check out on IMDB Jeff Nichols next film, Midnight Special, the whole film is about traveling well (running in this case) across the states.

I'm going to be cautiously optimistic, because it does sound radically different, and I actually think his collaborations with Willis were pretty good, while everything since...well, okay I only saw Signs, and that wasn't TERRIBLE, but word on the interwebs, everything he's done is worse than the last.

The story sounds good and Willis has delivered two great performances under Shyamalan's direction. I swear though, if this sucks I will never give this man the benefit of a doubt again. This is his last shot.
