Charlie Hunnam hopes Pacific Rim 2 remedies spectacle over storytelling

The movie chronicling the war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures didn't exactly make TRANSFORMERS box-office dollars, but PACIFIC RIM did do well enough to warrant a sequel. Aside from not having a license to rely on, there were those who felt the lack of success was due to the characeters being painted in broad strokes. That's putting it mildly, but I'm also not in agreement with those folks. PACIFIC RIM star Charlie Hunnam , on the other hand, is. He recently addressed the 'spectacle over substance' battle that big-budget movies face and how he looks back on his kaiju adventure.

Charlie Hunnam on the effect and story of PACIFIC RIM:

I think world creation and monster creation and all of that stuff is exciting as a secondary element of storytelling. When it becomes more important than storytelling, I get very nervous, and you sort of lose me a little bit. Although we tried very hard on PACIFIC RIM to marry those two elements, I do feel like ultimately it got weighed heavier on the side of spectacle than storytelling. I hope that we are able to remedy that a little bit going into the second. Not to say I wasn’t proud of the film. I really liked it, and I felt like it delivered exactly what it was supposed to. But I do feel like we could have maybe plumbed the depths of the character and the storytelling a little bit more.

While I found Guillermo's simplistic (not stupid) style to fit PACIFIC RIM like a glove, I realize that the second film will have to have a little more meat on it in terms of characterization in order for it to feel warranted. I'm not worried about the creatures or the action, as that's del Toro's bread and butter, so I hope Hunnam's concerns are addressed (if he still has them) once the script is finalized.

PACIFIC RIM 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on August 4, 2017.

One sequence from PACIFIC RIM that obliterates anything attempted in the bloated Transformers flicks.

I saw the movie Pacific Rim on video and I was thoroughly entertained. Yes, the movie puts spectacle ahead of character development but these movies are all about spectacle. The movie is just a series of unrelated scenes full of exciting action but of course what else do you expect from a compilation video? I'm a big fan of all the girls in this video (Katsumi, Lucy Lee, Lyla Lei, Elizabeth Lawrence, Charmane Star, Nautica Thorn, Teanna Kai, Lacey Tom, Mika Tan, Mya Luanna, Kitty,

(There already was a sequel to Pacific Rim starring Annie Cruz, Ava Devine, Charmane, Cherokee, Dana Vespoli, Finesse Navarro, Jayna Oso, Karen Kam, Kianna, Lucy Lee, Lyla Lei, Mia Smiles, Nautica Thorn, Nyomi Marcela, Roxy Jezel, Teoni and Venus so if there were another one it would actually be Pacific Rim 3.)

It was a great film, not a perfect one, but a whole lot better than most spectacle action films. Almost as good as Mad Max Fury Road in many ways.. I bet the second one will be amazing.

I don't understand the fan love for the first one. It was ok, but nothing special at all. If it were made by anyone other than Del Toro, it wouldn't get nearly the amount of love that it does.

I could think of a few other names that can do it better than Del Toro. Truth be told, even Hellboy had script problems. The only difference is that more people know Hellboy than kaiju movies.

I would think he would be more concerned with the HUGE plot holes and illogical actions of the first one. We can kill the monsters with projectile based weapons fired from our robots, but for some reason we can't fire them from planes or bases or from space. And we know they only come from one point on the planet but we don't have a base there, or lets say a huge 300 foot thick concrete barrier filled with bombs. I could go on and on. Its a spectacle yes, but they should have fleshed out the

I'm dying to see this and I'm very happy that we're getting a sequel. I often think I'm one of the only ones who absolutely loved the first one, even though the story was what some people refer to as basic. I thought it was so fun seeing giant monsters and giant robots beat the shit out of each other. I'd love to see Charlie Day and Burn Gorman become the badass rockstars this time around by taking mind control of Kaiju monsters using the tech they made in the first one to fight against giant

Be a cool way to flip-flop the story. And bring back Ron Perlman, of course.

I am very glad to read Hunnam's comments. They are exactly my concerns about Pacific Rim 2.
