Check out these unused concept designs for Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy

Oct. 9, 2013by: Niki Stephens

There were several ideas that never came to fruition in Sam Raimi's SPIDER-MAN trilogy. I guess that Marc Webb is currently making up for that in his own. Over at Jim Carson Design, there's some interesting concept art for Black Cat, Green Goblin, Spidey's suit, and much more.

I don't know what it is, but there's something about that Goblin mask that I like. The mechanical suit from the movie was pretty wicked though I'd like to see something closer to the comic version. Aside from the bluish color on Black Cat's costume, it's pretty much what I already envisioned for the character if and when she did show up.

Check out some of the concepts below. Carson has done concept art for several other movies like MINORITY REPORT, SUPERMAN REBORN, MEN IN BLACK, FACE/OFF, FIREFLY, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, THOR, to check out those galleries head here.

ADI had the mask nearly finished! Imagine how much more menacing the Goblin would have been if Willem Dafoe had been able to use his creepy smile with this makeup. [link]

OMFG!!

Did anyone notice that the artist might have a thing for Jessie Spano??? LOL...I don't think she was going to be Black Cat.....then again with Raimi who knows. Elizabeth Berkley..

They really dropped the ball on the Green Goblin.... that concept art in the third picture looks great, and how he's physically alter would have probably been the better route to go.

Raimis trilogy sucks ass

If any of these concepts had became a reality I'm sure it would have been an improvement!

The thing about the Green Goblin comic book look...is that I don't know how he actually became the Green Goblin (only got in to Spider-man in the late 80's and the Goblin wasn't anywhere near my list of favorite villains though Osborns part in the terrible Clone Saga storyline may have in fact made it impossible for me to be objective about him) but in the movie, the whole thing was being made for the military. With that in mind...why would the military be interested in having their pilots

With that in mind...why would the military be interested in having their pilots look like anything like the Green Goblin we know from the comics ...which is why the above designs would have worked well. It's a shame that Spider-Man 3 so badly let down the whole Raimi package. My son was watching it the other day...and god...crybaby Parkers antics just keep getting worse each time I see it. Parker and MJ were just so very unlikable in that movie. I'm still bothered by the oversight that Brock's name was mentioned in the first movie yet...Brock Junior shows up in this movie and they're not the same people. Brock's hatred for Parker was completely rushed (both the 90's animated series and the Spectacular Spider Man animated series did it brilliantly). Alas... I digress...the images above look good and would like to have seen Black Cat show up in the movies. By the way, I've just bought Amazing Spider-Man on Blu-ray. Only seen it the once...and have increasingly hated it the more I think about it. Lets hope a few repeat viewings...in addition to the deleted scenes will fix that opinion for the better. I certainly like the direction the future movies are heading in :o)

that's the thing that Raimi fans don't see....as I liked the first movie and the second when I saw them in theaters I didn't love them and they certainly don't stand the test of time now or even 5 years ago. The scenes and the acting and EVERYTHING is just silly. Doesn't mean we needed a "dark" spiderman because Raimi tried something like that in the 3rd one....kind of and look what happened...we just needed a more thoughtful story and deeper sub-plots and my gosh a deeper plot. To the people

I think there's potential in the designs and they probably might have worked better than the Power Rangers villain-style Goblin we ended up with, but something feels off about some of them. Maybe it's the smile the concept artist drew on. Maybe if the mouth area was covered with some kind of sculpted-on permanent smile, but the eyes were visible behind the goggles, it might have worked. Interesting to see what could've been!

It's a shame they didn't use that original mask for the Green Goblin. It would have looked so much better than what we originally got.

Would have loved to have seen Venom done right in Raimi's trilogy even though it was the studio's fault and not his. And I would have also loved to have seen Raimi's take on Carnage as well. I always thought he would have made an awesome final villian for Spider Man to face in Raimi's franchise.

Agree 100%. The Venom/Carnage storyline is one of my favorite comic book story lines ever for any character

Hopefully. The thing I like most about the new franchise reboot is seeing villains that we haven't seen yet on the big screen.
