by: Mike Sampson Mar. 10, 2010

In an excerpt from an interview that runs in full in today's print edition, the LA Times has the first quotes from Christopher Nolan on his plans to reboot the SUPERMAN franchise. Says Nolan, "It’s very exciting, we have a fantastic story. And we feel we can do it right. We know the milieu, if you will, we know the genre and how to get it done right.

Nolan, and his producer Emma Thomas, were asked about some of the rumors that have spread around the internet like the MAN OF STEEL title and that Lex Luthor and Brainiac will be the villains. Though they didn't confirm or deny anything, Thomas said with a laugh, "I don’t know where this stuff comes from."

As it turns out, the key to getting this all made was writer David Goyer who told Nolan he had an idea for how the director would approach a SUPERMAN film. "I immediately got it, loved it and thought: That is a way of approaching the story I’ve never seen before that makes it incredibly exciting. I wanted to get Emma and I involved in shepherding the project right away and getting it to the studio and getting it going in an exciting way."

There is also the obligatory BATMAN 3 update, which includes word that Jonathan Nolan is indeed writing the script (based off an idea by Goyer) but Nolan insists he hasn't yet agreed to direct.

Click here to read the full story at the LA Times and if you have access, pick up the print edition today to read more about the upcoming film INCEPTION.

Extra Tidbit: He also said he'd like John Krasinski to play his Superman. (Just kidding.)

Wow.
So, if you told me in 1998 after Batman and Robin, and Tim Burton's half-attempt at Superman that in 12 years there would be a Batman trilogy that rivals Star Wars and LOTR, an amazing Bryan "Usual Suspects Singer Superman, and and Nolan Superman....well...i would have spit on your leg.

He has to be Superman again. He was the only thing doing any justice to the first two Reeve's films. Everyone else should walk away, and stay away. Far, far away... Routh back, drop the rest.

Wow. Pretty awesome news. While I dont think Superman should be a gritty movie, at least the Nolans will ground it enough to make it less of a cheesefest. Even if he doesn't direct, his influence could do wonders for the franchise seeing as it's been turned to enough of a shit-parade already. And Nolan's gotta' do something about the suit. I'd like to see...
Karl Urban as Superman/Clark Kent and Olivia Wilde as Lois Lane. And like a previous poster mentioned, I too loved Millar's idea of a truly EPIC trilogy that traced his entire existence from birth on Kripton to watching the sun flame out over the frozen wasteland of a long-destroyed earth.

If they beefed him up enough, I could see them getting Joseph Gordon-Levitt if mostly for the fact that Nolan's worked with him and I'm sure his level of considerations is relatively high.

About time
This could work. Superman is a hard concept to tackle, especially in the modern climate of film and story telling—it has been done before, time and time again. But Nolan has what it takes, and I have a feeling he could pull this off rather well.

What I really would like to know is who would make a good Superman. Routhe is a great choice, I heard some talk about Matthew Fox who would be interesting. But who else? Maybe it's time to change up the image of Superman again?

I don't know if I'm in the minority here but I always liked Mark Millar's idea of a Superman trilogy that sort of tracks his whole existence on Earth, even after the human race is gone.

Nolan won't Direct
For those saying he might direct - I can't see Nolan taking on Superman. I doubt he would tackle another MAJOR comic book character so soon. And come on, his brother is already working on the screenplay. I get a feeling he's going to sign for the next Bats.

Why is everyone so in love with Brandon Routh??
...i don't hate him or anything but he had NO LINES in superman returns...i mean he hardly spoke at all!!...if it was handled better im sure he would of made a great superman but alot of people hated returns and seeing him again as sups would hurt the film and make this feel like a sequel not a reboot which is what this is a reboot...i'd like to see him in more movies but i dont see him playing...

I like Matthew Fox as Superman also. I don't think he would be too old, but I never knew he was a vegetarian. That sucks.

I like Matthew Fox, but not as Supes. I'm not sure how they'd get a strict vegetarian to add the 40 pounds necessary to make him remotely convincing. Besides, he's too old to start a franchise.

No Dark Superman
I hope that Nolan doesn't give Superman the TDK effect and make him a dramatic dark brooding character. That's not Superman, Superman is everything that Batman isn't.

Nolan knows the score
Nolan knows a good project when he sees one. Though I too think someone else should direct so we can get Nolan back on another Batman movie.

My choice for Superman? Easy. Tommy Wiseau.

This sounds great and all. But if C. Nolan does direct it, we may never see a third batman installment. I hope he get's his brother Jonah to take it up. Leaving time for Chris to get on with doing the next batman.

This is good news. "Reboots" should be an entirely new take on a franchise...not just new characters and a story, but a new direction and feel over all, like the comic book itself is being reinvented. Therefore I think Nolan could handle this for obvious reasons.

I really like Nolan's style and direction and the fact that he's involved in the 100th attempt at a "good" Superman film makes me excited for this and I'm just saying, but if this one doesn't work with Nolan and all, I don't think anything ever will and they should just stop making Superman films.

Superman deserved better then what Singer had to offer. Superman Returns wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. The Man of Steel is a great character that shouldn't just be used on the CW.
