Cool Videos: Animated Open Letter to J.J. Abrams: 4 Rules to Make Star Wars Great Again

09.27.2013

Everyone has their own ideas on how to make STAR WARS: EPISODE VII a great film. In this animated open letter from TrumanPDX to J.J. Abrams, they keep their requests simple and reasonable.

The animated video is definitely worth your time especially if you are a fan of the franchise. But for those who want to know upfront how TrumanPDX could make STAR WARS better, here are the 4 rules:

Rule one: The setting is the frontier

Rule two: The future is old

Rule three: The force is mysterious

Rule four: Star Wars isn't cute

Oh, and here's a rule that didn't make the cut according to writer Prescott Harvey who kind of sounds like Ryan Reynolds in the video:

"My favorite rule that didn't make the cut is "The Jedi are Pacifists". In the prequels, Qui Gon, Mace Windu and Yoda are a bunch of acrobatic ninjas with crazy special abilities. But what makes the original movies so interesting is that the Jedi (Yoda and Obiwan) are true pacifists. They refuse to fight, even to the point of death. Now, that doesn't make them as interesting for the action sequences, but it really contrasts the good guys from the bad guys. It also made Luke's internal struggle more compelling. Who do you choose, the morally sound boring guys, or the corrupt guys with all the awesome abilities? I think this rule really contributed to the strong mythology created in the original films. But it was difficult to explain this concept in twenty seconds of video. Plus I don't speak for all fans on this one. Lots of people cite the Darth Maul lightsaber battles as the best part of 'The Phantom Menace'."

While that was clever and enjoyable, and the observations are hopefully obvious to Abrams (or rather, to Michael Arndt, who is actually writing the damn thing), I can't help but feel a little nervous at how often I see stuff like this regarding Star Wars. Like...if this film is made and it's turns out to be bad, are Star Wars fans going to riot? Can I trust that some crazed fan won't bring a gun to the theater in case Jar Jar makes an on-screen appearance? I mean, there's "I collect

Can I trust that some crazed fan won't bring a gun to the theater in case Jar Jar makes an on-screen appearance? I mean, there's "I collect memorabilia and know all the minor characters' names" obsession and then there's "I cut the film's logo into my skin and stalk the directors" obsession, and the tone of Star Wars fans lately seems to border closer to the "Misery" end of that scale...

Oh gee, more self righteous fans limiting what the series can be and telling the director they know best. Get over yourselves.

Nice little blueprint

Cute for cuteness sake is bad, and I think that was sort of what was meant. Don't cop out and make completely useless cute characters just so that you can sell toys. I am totally with the Future is Old rule, one of my biggest beefs with the prequels. I wouldn't mind if we got a scene in a hollowed-out version of the capital, just to see how time has taken its toll there as well. And I kind of have to give credit to George Lucas for not explaining away the Force, although he did end up using it

The Jedi aren't pacifists, they're samurai. And if they can resolve a situation using reason and mind tricks, then that's great. It seems that what separates the Jedi from the Dark Side is malicious intent.

City vs. Frontier

This was really great BUT I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with depicting urban politics in a Star Wars movie. It isn't unimaginable that the conspiracy leading to the creation of the Empire could have been handled in an exciting way, with intrigue and betrayal right out of a top-notch political thriller. We didn't get that but it doesn't mean there isn't potential excitement in that aspect of the Star Wars universe. Of course the frontier is the heart of the movie--I love that

Obi-wan a pacifist? Bullshit! He sliced a dudes arm off in a bar instead of waving a hand and saying you want to go back to your drinks.

Actually, I think he tried that, but it didn't work. So arm-chopping it is.

SPOT-ON!

Seriously, that was well thought-out and perfectly executed. I couldn't say it any better myself...and in explaining Star Wars, he sums up part of why the prequels are terrible (they're also just poorly written and lazily directed - shot/reverse shot, plus they're overly reliant on CGI, constantly contradict storylines and plot points from the OT, oh who am I kidding, I could write novels about why the Prequels are terrible).

Can I Get An Amen...

I agree with the majority of their thinking on this. It's hard to argue.

And BTW, Han is/was a bad ass and he definitely shot first. Get them before they get you thinking for a smuggler. Naturally.

Well done! I would say a touch of cuteness is inevitable. Even Yoda is cute, and I guess the toy merchandising is a Force to be reckoned with. A touch of shining newness and parliamentary politics might not be all bad either, if only to contrast with the grittiness and the dangers of the various frontiers. Cad Bane could do well in live-action...

Agreed. Even Princess Leia was cute. But the cuteness, and the shiny politics, should indeed be kept to a minimum.

They Jedi were pacifist?

The reason that obi-wan and yoda didn't fight in the original trilogy is that they were old as fuck not that they were pacifist. Obi-wan knew he had to fight Vader it buy his friends some time and surrendered to the force once he say his friends were close to escaping. In the new trilogy they did start out as pacifist but thru sith manipulation they drifted away during the clone wars. Anakin struggled most with being peacekeepers and that's why he turned away from the Jedi. Yoda and obi-wan

Yoda and obi-wan didn't fight after the fall of the Jedi because they knew they couldn't win alone but maybe with the offspring of the strongest Jedi ever known if they waited they might be able to bring balance back to the force, and they did.

The bit with Yoda in the video...

legitimately more inspiring than any of the prequels.

Rule 4 doesn't make sense, especially since one of the main characters is a robot who speaks entirely with "beeps & boops". That's about as cute as you can get.
