Dane DeHaan talks about Peter and Harry's complicated relationship in The Amazing Spider-Man 2

01.09.2014

In an interview with Digital Spy, Dane DeHaan revealed some details on THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 about Harry Osborn and Peter Parker's relationship, and the complexities of the story arc in the upcoming film. In Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies, Harry and Peter were friends in high school (and after graduation), but in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, DeHaan's Harry Osborn has been away for some time. So will the two instantly be BFFs again when they meet in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2? Kind of, says DeHaan.

When you first meet Harry he's just graduated from high school, and he has to come back to New York to help deal with Oscorp, and its legacy, and his father. He also sees Peter Parker for the first time in a long time; they were childhood friends. So it's really about Harry having a friendship with Peter and an allegiance to Peter, but also being the heir apparent to Oscorp, and having to deal with that. Yeah, and it's a friendship that... I mean, they haven't been friends for such a long time, but they definitely both feel like they used to be best friends, and ideally they would love to rekindle that friendship.

Dane DeHaan also says there will be certain things Harry will need from Peter Parker and Spider-Man.

It's becoming very obvious that all of these villains are originating from within Oscorp, in one way or the other. There are things that Harry feels he owes Peter, and things he needs from Peter, there are things he feels he needs from Spider-Man, and then there's his responsibility to Oscorp. It's a very complicated storyline, really cool and dynamic.

Clearly Dane DeHaan's Harry Osborn is going to have a lot on his plate in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2. Although I liked James Franco's version of the character in Sam Raimi's films, I'm quite excited to see DeHaan as Harry. The guy is very talented, and I think he will do a fantastic job in the new movie.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 also stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti, and Chris Cooper, and will hit theaters on May 1st, 2014.

So Peter's best friend growing up was the son of the owner of Oscorp which is where Peter's father worked and yet Peter never knew his father worked at Oscorp? Also if Harry is going to take over Oscorp does this mean Norman Osborn is a;ready dead and Harry blames Peter and/or Spiderman for this because Curt Connors had been working on a way to save him? And will it turn out in the end that Norman Osborn is not dead after all which then means we will have the real Green Goblin in Amazing

DeHaan playing Harry Osborne is my favorite addition to the cast. The guy is a brilliant actor and I can't wait to see what he brings to the table after Franco absolutely owned the role himself.

I think he will be great as Harry, BUT the only thing that worries me is the reason he goes after Spider-Man. Raimi had a great Build Up to why Harry wanted to get Spider-Man. They were friends, His dad was attacked by Spider-man and died, He tries to find out who Spider-Man is, then wants revenge and becomes the goblin. It wasn't the best Pay Off in the world but I'm curious why Harry, in this film, is directly becoming goblin and attacking Spider-Man immediately. We'll see.

May be Spider-Man's DNA...discovered by the bit of blood that dropped when the police shot him (always wondered why the camera focused on it) is found by Oscorp people who believe it might be some kind of cure for Norman..or something. Only the DNA collected is contaminated and they need to capture the source. Honestly, I prefer how it went down in Raimi's version to what I just suggested...but like you said...we'll see.

It still bothers me that no mention of this "friendship" was made in the first movie. Fair enough they've not seen each other in a long time...but the impression you get when Peter sneaks in to Oscorp (at that poor Hispanic boy's expense!) was that he really knew nothing about the company other than his dad had worked there when he was little. I mean, c'mon, Junior Harry would not have gone to the same kiddie school as Peter...so the friendship could not have developed there. Chances

Chances are...that Mr Parker took his kid over to Norman's house when he had meetings. Harry probably didn't get to see too much of life outside of the house...so cherished a visit from another child his age. That's probably how it'll go down...which makes it all the more odd it just didn't come up in the first movie.

Yeah, I agree with you. Putting Harry in this movie feels a bit forced.

I think he could well steal the show. He reminds me a lot of a younger Leonardo DiCaprio.

Stephen Moyer said much the same thing when DeHaan was on TRUE BLOOD - the DiCaprio reference, I mean.
