Does Captain America's costume in The Winter Soldier tease Nick Fury's fate?

Feb. 12, 2014by: Alex Maidy

While I am not the resident Captain America expert on staff here, I definitely am digging the new costume worn by Chris Evans in the posters and trailer for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. The subdued colors look less cartoony and a hell of a lot more badass. Fans of the character already know the costume well and that when it appeared in the pages of Marvel Comics, it was worn by Steve Rogers at a very different point in his career with S.H.I.E.L.D.

The trailers for the movie are already teasing major issues within S.H.I.E.L.D. that seem to pit Cap against Nick Fury and the other forces of the agency. We also see that Bucky Barnes, now The Winter Soldier, seems to be responsible for an attack on Nick Fury that puts puts the director in intensive care. Does Nick Fury die in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER? And, if he does, does Steve Rogers become S.H.I.E.L.D.'s new director?

Co-director Joe Russo told SFX that the various costumes worn by Captain America in the movie were deliberately selected.

"We wanted to use his Super Soldier outfit from the comic books as a way to represent, thematically, his place in the world of SHIELD and the difference between working for SHIELD and being Captain America."

"We wanted to put Cap in a space where hes a special forces operative for SHIELD who goes on missions around the world that are clandestine and sometimes require a certain level of anonymity or stealth," he explained. "The movie has a very thematic component in terms of the use of costumes. When you come to see the film I think youll understand why we made the choice we made."

Samuel L. Jackson's portrayal of Nick Fury is a nine-picture commitment with CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER representing his fifth film playing the character. Killing him off may not be in the cards, but it doesn't mean that Steve Rogers cannot take control of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the wake of the film's events.

April 4th cannot come soon enough so that we can see for ourselves just how much CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER will shake up the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

No it doesn't

The guy under the cover most likely isn't Sam Jackson or Mackey because they have multi picture deals with Marvel. It probably is not Redford either as if he is the villain, why would Black Widow be sad that he is dead? It's probably the Winter soldier. He and Black Widow both have ties with Russia and maybe had a relationship at some point. This is covered in the comics as well.

I am always confused when people say Captain America's costume is too cartoony, or bad or cheese etc. Its the AMERICAN FLAG?????? I am not even American but I actually think the flag is pretty cool and I for one would love to have Cap in his full colorful costume! (His Avengers costume was great!) I do like his SHIELD costume though! So for this movie it seems to make sense and I agree with the approach, but I wouldn't want him in that for all future movies. At some point he has to go back to

Nick Fury will "die", disappear, go deep undercover and be regularly replaced with a robot lookalike in the comics. Kind of a part of his character.
To me the trailer suggested that Redford's character was a SHIELD top brass who gains power when Fury is attacked, and maybe turns SHIELD against Cap to some degree when he won't fall in line, with Falcon and Black Widow being among the few who stick by Cap.
But yeah, Fury could "die" and then show up in another film quite easily - that's how he

Nah

As Black Widow is crying in the scene where there is a body covered up I'm guessing the person killed off is either Robert Redfords character - hence Sam L Jacksons quip about 'I guess your'e the one in charge now' to Cap or Anthony Mackie's Falcon as I can't see him forming any further part of the Marvel universe. As most have pointed out Sam L Jackson has signed a 9 pic deal with Marvel and is too powerful and actor to be killed off at this stage especially when he's still rumoured to be in

The other point I would make is it could be possible it is Peggy Carters granddaughter of whom Cap is not aware of - I am sure there are pics of Agent Carter sporting a grey wig out there possibly meaning another meeting with Cap ? A bit left field but then as I said Widow appears to be crying and would she really shed a tear for Fury ?

Can't see them killing off Nick Fury. Both the character and the actor are too iconic. If they do kill him off, at all, it would be in a bigger film, like the next or the third Avenger's film.

It's called Life Model Decoy - this happens all the time in the comics. A character "dies" but comes back after explaining it was a LMD that was killed. Fury abuses this the most.

Considering that in the comics the costume is now being worn by (the white) Nick Fury's bald headed illegitimate son who happened to be black and just recently been sporting an eye patch just like his old man, this really teases nothing about Nick Fury's death in the Marvel Movie Universe.

Doubting most of those rumors

Fury dying and Capt becoming Director of Shield? Nah.

Instead, Redfords character takes over shield. And is really Red Skull. Sticking to it, sticking to it lol

Way to heavily imply that he's expected to die in the title of your article, dude. Even if it's probably a bull shit rumor, you shouldn't be so transparent and divulging with your headlines. That said, what a fucking stretch.

I doubt Fury dies. I think TAE K's post (below) summarizes it perfectly. He'll start the beginning of to film trusting Shield, then as the film continues there will be animosity and trust issues which will lead to Cap wearing the old Red, White, and Blue uniform.

Can't wait for this. By far my most anticipated film of the year.

i interpret the quote about deliberate costumne choices to go the other way

the movie starts with Steve Rogers in his SHIELD costume (as a trusted agent). by the end, he's back in his classic costume as THE Captain America (e.g. no longer a SHIELD agent and his own thing).

Where is the idea that Cap it taking over shield coming from? The quote just says that cap sometimes has to use a stealthier costume for some missions with shield. Cap isn't even the second in command of shield that would be Maria Hill. It seems off that they would kill Fury only to Colson him for other movies especially when he still has 4 more movies under contract.

To answer the question asked in this article's title; no, it doesn't. Especially since the article you linked to didn't even bring up that premise.

Starting off a CA article pretty much dissing the character

The costume is bland, I'm very happy to hear it's ditched, and he returns to a more Captain America look.
