This new image from Star Trek Into Darkness shows us Benedict Cumberbatch inside a glass case of emotion and possibly his character's name

Dec. 10, 2012by: Alex Maidy

The STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS trailer gave me all sorts of chills and I am doubly excited after reading JimmyO's take on the first nine minutes. The best part is that we still have no clue who Benedict Cumberbatch is playing. Sure, we can theorize, but it would be one hell of an accomplishment if we can get all the way to May without knowing if he is Khan, Gary Mitchell, or someone else entirely.

We have a brand new image from STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS that features Spock, Kirk, and Cumberbatch's character who is billed as John Harrison, in a face-off. The prison walls appear to be glass which begs the question as to why villains like Loki in THE AVENGERS, Silva in SKYFALL, and now Cumberbatch are all kept at by by such a simplistic prison cell.  I assume John Harrison is a little bit of misdirection so that we do not figure out who the villain really is.  Or, we could all be overanalyzing and this is an original creation for the movie.

Whatever the case may be, STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS continues to heat up leading to the debut of the full trailer and the first 9 minutes of footage in front of THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY on December 14th.

Plot: In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller. It will open on May 17th, 2013.

Well, from now on until otherwise specified, I shall either refer to this villain as John Harrison, or Benedict Cumberbatch. Even if it's just misdirection, that way I don't have to worry about the baggage a Khan or Mitchell might bring along.

Family...

Something I thought about...
This movie is about FAMILY, or so it seems...
Could the villain be Kirk's brother... It seems awfully simplistic, but think about it...
He's NOT Kahn, Gary Mitchell was used in the comics so he's not an option either...
And what could be more traumatic for Kirk but to fight his 'blood' to save his 'family' ?

The comics don't count for anything. The Transformers movie tie-in comics were constantly rendered moot by each sequel.

for real ..this is the 2nd post ive read you talking about the comics. The comics arent going to mean shit when it comes to the movie, regardless of whether someone says they are canon or not. Thats Gary Mitchell

This 'rule' I'm talking about is not from me, but from Kurtzman and Orci (and / or Abrams, not sure about him) while doing the promotion for the first one... That was their condition to supervise the new comics...

two words, four syllables

Gar - y
Mitch - ell

Alice Eve's character has the exact same hair color, hairdo, and outfit as Elizabeth Dehner, who is directly connected to Gary Mitchell. Alice Eve's unnamed character is a focal point in the teaser. I don't think there is any question about it. Cumberbatch is Mitchell.

I don't think he's imprisoned in this picture and I think that the point of the villain being a nobody in the old school show like John Harrison is to further play with the idea that we're in a different Star Trek reality. Events that were changed now have different outcomes and such.

He's definitely some kind of Starfleet officer. Same uniform style, only in black. Anyone thought about a possible Section 31 connection? Maybe a rogue agent from there gone ballistic on Starfleet. Not sure I would prefer that over Khan or any of the other characters who've been suggested, but it's a possibility.

Harrison

Was the name of one of Kirks crew in the original series, not a major character, just a recurring extra who popped up in a few episodes, including Space Seed (Khans episode)

John Harrison

Harrison was a self-educated English carpenter and later a clockmaker. He invented the marine chronometer, a long-sought device in solving the problem of establishing the East-West position or longitude of a ship at sea, thus revolutionizing and extending the possibility of safe long distance sea travel in the Age of Sail.
Don't know if there will be any relation, but I could possibly see how a similar device may play into the Star Trek mythology.

You mean dialog in a cage/prison? Magneto in X-Men had that covered a few years before TDK.

Thank you Captain for clarifying that bit.

I'm sure I could think of others before that, but he truly is the image that comes most readily to mind.
