Ed Helms to head the Griswold family in the next Vacation movie

07.11.2012

Ed Helms looks to be ending one nightmare road trip in THE HANGOVER and starting up a brand new one in New Line's VACATION, the remake of the classic Chevy Chase franchise.

While a reboot of NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION has been talked about for quite a while, it seems that this new VACATION will be neither a reboot or a remake but rather a sequel of sorts.

Variety is reporting that Helms will portray Rusty Griswold, son of Chevy Chase's Clark Griswold character. This would also leave the door open for a possible cameo by Chase in the film. Rusty would be embarking on his own family misadventure. Rusty Griswold was portrayed by Anthony Michael Hall, Jason Lively, and Ethan Embry in the prior films.

The new VACATION comes from HORRIBLE BOSSES screenwriters John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein who will also direct the movie. Daley and Goldstein are also responsible for the upcoming THE INCREDIBLE BURT WONDERSTONE with Steve Carrel and Jim Carrey as well as CLOUDY 2: REVENGE OF THE LEFTOVERS. Production is set to begin just as soon as THE HANGOVER PART III wraps.

I have to say this is inspired casting. I like Helms personality and he can definitely sell the straight man character he has become associated with from film and THE OFFICE. I am now looking forward to seeing how this project comes together.

Extra Tidbit: CHRISTMAS VACATION is one of my all-time favorites.

Sounds Cool

This sounds cool like everyone else has been saying. It's not a reboot or a remake just a continuation of the series. I hope it has the same feel as the first film because it is by far the best of the series Helms seems like the perfect choice to take over as the dad who wants the best vacation but his plans are sent straight to hell. He is a brilliant comedic actor and a great banjo player to boot Also am I the only one that really doesn't like Christmas Vacation? I just don't find it funny

Yes I am prepared for all of the hate I will get for saying that.

I don't have a problem with this, but

I do have a problem with the fact that Rusty will have been portrayed by a fifth actor when this film is complete. Anthony Michael Hall would have been my choice. He was funny on his "Community" guest spot.

This doesn't sound that bad. I like how they aren't rebooting and just making a sequel with one of the family members. Ed Helms is talented and will make a good Rusty.

Have Chase and Quaid in it as support and I will be happy.

ehhhhh... without Chevy, Beverly, and Akyroyd It's just not National Lampoon's. I'll wait for a trailer to pass judgement though.

I'm down for this flick, we need some Cousin Eddy though. And a lot of Chase, not like he has anything else to do atm.

Let's not forget that Johnny Galecki was Rusty in "Christmas Vacation". But Ed Helms will do a great job....given the right material.

I'm down for them moving to Rusty. But it would have been amazing for Anthony Michael Hall to reprise it.

But then again, Vacation movies are notorious for recasting the kids, so why not?

I'm not 100% sure I'm down with seeing Chevy or Beverly in the film. If they want to allude to them or something that's cool, but given how Chevy & Bev looked relatively good in "Vegas Vacation" I'd prefer that be the last time I see their characters. Seeing how Beverly has undergone the most hideous plastic surgery imaginable and Chevy has ballooned it would honestly depress me to see them playing those characters again. "Vegas" wasn't perfect but it didn't leave a "holy shit they got old

I don't want to get ahead of myself, but I'm actually kinda excited about this now. And let me echo the sentiment that Chevy should have more than just a cameo role. Maybe have Rusty want to take over the planning/executing of the family vacations but Clark is resistant to giving those duties up.

Hoping Chevy has more than cameo...

This would be a cool "Passing of the Torch" type film, where Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo have more than just a cameo.

Also, if they make a sequel, I expect someone else to play Rusty.

Despite the talent involved, in the back of mind I know that there is a very good chance this movie will suck. I'd like a Chase cameo, but I'd love a Randy Quaid as cousin eddie cameo.

Ok...

I was going to go ape shit crazy until I read he would be playing Rusty. This is the perfect type of film to continue and not butcher with a remake.
