Emma Stone in talks to play Cruella de Vil in live-action Disney film

01.06.2016

Disney's ambition to give every one of their animated characters the live-action treatment is proceeding as planned; next step, world domination. The next Disney character to make the leap to live-action (again) will be Cruella de Vil, the villainess who sought to capture and skin a large amount of Dalmatian puppies in Disney's 1961 animated classic ONE HUNDRED AND ONE DALMATIANS. As to who might play such a despicable character, THR has the scoop. The outlet reports that Emma Stone is currently in early talks to play the character in CRUELLA.

CRUELLA will be an origin story for the character, taking place before she became a walking collection of cheek bones and fur-coats, and although the film doesn't have a director attached at the moment, it's considered to be a priority project by Disney. The latest script for CRUELLA comes from Kelly Marcel (FIFTY SHADES OF GREY) and Disney would like shooting to get underway later this year. The last live-action version of Cruella de Vil was played to the hilt by Glenn Close around twenty years ago, but I'd be curious to see how Emma Stone would tackle the character before her slide into murderous puppy lust.

Emma Stone's upcoming work includes LA LA LAND, Damien Chazelle's follow-up to WHIPLASH which pairs Stone with Ryan Gosling as two young people who are "drawn together by their common desire to do what they love. But as success mounts they are faced with decisions that begin to fray the fragile fabric of their love affair, and the dreams they worked so hard to maintain in each other threaten to rip them apart." Billed as a modern-day Hollywood musical, LA LA LAND will see its release on July 15, 2016.

Hmmm

I really did not like the Cinderella movie or Alice in Wonderland, but she's a good enough actress that could pull it off. I hope they don't give this a Maleficent treatment where she was good, then evil because of men issues, and then good again. I know I wont enjoy this rendition of her as much as the OUAT version, but I wont make any judgments just yet until there are more details and or a trailer.

huh...I didn't think Cruella needed an origin story nor would I have ever picked Emma Stone for the role. I currently have no desire to see this movie get made, but I'll reserve my decision on seeing it after it's released.

Oh hell no!

Although I love Emma Stone as an actress, this movie has "bad idea" written all over it. We don't need to know Cruella De Vil's backstory, and if they were, it would be a very black comedy - too black for the Mouse House.

The only animated Disney film that needs a live-action remake is The Black Cauldron, because the original wasn't really good (it certainly wasn't for kids) but it's a good source material for a live-action fantasy film.

I've actually never seen the movie, but I read Lloyd Alexander's "The Book of Three" and I'm surprised that series seems to get so little love.

I don't hate Disney's attempts at remaking their older animation projects as live action fare. BUT, Emma Stone is too young. Cruella Deville is a mean old spinster, not a hot 20 something.

Disney is already doubling up on the live-action remakes at this point. That's just sad. I wonder is Disney will ever make live action versions of some of their less successful animated films. A live action Atlantis or Treasure Planet would be cool. Or at least better than a Cruella origin movie.

Disney Exec: here's an idea for a live action film... CRUELLA.
Disney Exec's Boss: a live action 101 Dalmatians? we've already done that.
Disney Exec: only this time, there's no dalmatians.
Disney Exec's Boss: (checks the numbers on Star Wars) eh... fuck it. green light.

The only one I'm really interested in is Mulan. One of favorite Disney films as a kid and one of the few I thing would translate really well to live action.

Tim Burton's Dumbo maybe, just because it's going to be so freaking crazy.
