AMERICAN GANGSTER was a project that almost never happened. Antoine Fuqua was scheduled to direct Denzel Washington and Benicio Del Toro in the film (originally titled THE RETURN OF SUPERFLY) when creative differences shut production down. Universal pulled the plug on the film and was ready to settle deals with both actors who had pay-to-play deals. But producer Brian Grazer knew a good thing when he saw it and wasn't about to let GANGSTER die. Eventually the project was reborn with Ridley Scott directing and Russell Crowe stepping in for Del Toro. The film, which takes place in the 1970s, follows a former drug kingpin who shifts sides and works with New York City detective to help stop the flow of heroin into the US. Today at JoBlo.com we're excited to debut for you the teaser one-sheets for AMERICAN GANGSTER (one Denzel, one Russell), which is scheduled for release this November. I very much like the dark, ominous feel of this art.

These are how posters should be. Make ya want to see the movie without knowing anything about it.

I'm calling it already...
Academy Award winner for Best Film...while both Washington and Crowe are nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively.

chainsaw411- i know what you mean... but I think what I meant was that I just have a sneaking suspicion that they're going to try to make this look like "Training Day" when it should be "Godfather" or "Heat" or "25th Hour". Just my cynicism at the studios' ability to market a film like this. Ridley Scott is a genius, and he's been consistently screwed over by his studios when it comes to both...

Just my cynicism at the studios' ability to market a film like this. Ridley Scott is a genius, and he's been consistently screwed over by his studios when it comes to both the marketing and final cuts of his films. I really think the director's cut of "Kingdom of Heaven" is one of his three best films, and just look at the theatrical cut to see how butchered it was. Okay, I'll step off the soapbox now.

awesome
I'm excited to see this become a great new gangster movie, you could say The Departed was, but I didn't feel like that really captured the classic gangster lifestyle, it was more about the cops and moles. Im extremely excited for this.

wait...
I thought Denzel was the straight up villain in this flick. He's a pseudo-goodguy? Lame.

Nice
I Like both posters. and to dannyboylee it is not going to be a urban, hip hop movie because it is set in the 70s. hip hop was not that big in 70s. but we do need a trailer.

i really hope this isn't just another urban, hip hop kind of street drama. It should be epic, sweeping... "Godfather" style. THAT'S how it should be marketed. These posters are awesome. I hope they don't drop the ball when the trailer comes around.
