Exclusive: What will one of Marvel's Phase 3 films be in 2016?

Feb. 6, 2014by: Paul Shirey

A reliable source has dropped a nice look into the future of Marvel films, filling in the blank on one of their upcoming Phase 3 films and it might surprise you. Now, this news may not drop your jaw to the floor, so keep your expectations in check. It is, however, an interesting choice when you consider all the other avenues the studio could go. The first film to kick off Phase 3 is Edgar Wright's ANT-MAN, which opens on July 17, 2015. Additionally, Marvel has dates set aside for at least two of their other Phase 3 films, that being May 6, 2016 and May 5, 2017, but with no titles announced...yet.

The thought (hope?) of many die-hard fans is that those two would be DR. STRANGE and BLACK PANTHER, but our source is here to burst your bubble. Or not, depending on how you look at it. Because even with this news, there's still room for two more films that we DON'T know of in the Phase 3 agenda, which could very well be the aforementioned titles (or possibly, with recent announcements, CAPTAIN AMERICA or THOR's threequel).

However, we've learned that the film currently on slate for the May 6, 2016 (EDIT: source has clarified it will be  sometime in 2016...not necessarily on May 6, 2016) date is...

...GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2! (or whatever subtitle they give it).

You may have heard rumblings of a GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY animated series as well, which we can also confirm. The series is aiming for a Fall 2015 debut on Disney XD, which would segue nicely into a sequel to the film the following year (especially with an established audience). Shocked by this? Don't be. Those that have seen the Comic Con footage of the film can attest to how badass the flick looks and I'm pretty sure Marvel knows it as well. You certainly wouldn't bank a sequel and an animated series on something that was less than a sure thing. I suppose there's potential for the film to bomb, but with everyone rallying behind what James Gunn and the cast/crew have done with next summer's debut, it seems like a slam dunk. Personally, I think it looks fantastic and that's just from seeing the tossed together SDCC stuff. I can only imagine what the finished product will look like and that gets me all kind of excited.

So, there it is. Take it as rumor, fact, speculation, whatever, but that's the word from our wire. With Marvel Studio's Kevin Feige saying they've got plans all the way up to 2021 for the Marvel Cinematic Universe there's A LOT of room for speculation, hope, and some fun chatter about what could be and what will be, so feel free to jump into the conversation and let us know what you think!

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY kicks off on August 1, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: If Phase 3 consists of Ant-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, and The Avengers 3, what would YOU like the other two films to be (assuming they stick to the 5-film program, of course)?

Doc Strange and wait for it....Ms. Marvel. I think Marvel needs to beat WB to the punch and put out a movie with a badass super-hero babe.

I am disappointed...

...that Phase 3 isn't kicking off with Iron Man 4. I think this is a huge mistake as Iron Man not only started the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but has led both Phase 1 & 2 with fantastic, record-breaking results. As a fan, I think Marvel is being cheap not bringing Robert Downey Jr back for a 4th film while they still can. They are cheating both their bank account and their fans.

I seriously doubt RDJ will even be back for Iron Man after a certain point, let alone a 4th movie. The actor himself is a big proponent in someone new taking on the role. That doesn't inspire confidence in future Iron Man films happening soon.

I predict

Captain America 3 will introduce the Black Panther. Cap, Widow, Falcon, etc. will be sent to Wakanda because there is some menace that the Wakandan King cannot handle by himself, probably something involving black magic. Of course this appears to be too much for our heroes but the threat mysteriously vanishes in the final act. An end credit scene would then reveal that Doctor Strange saved them. That would introduce both characters in Phase 3. There probably won't be a Black Panther movie

That would introduce both characters in Phase 3. There probably won't be a Black Panther movie but he could appear in Avengers 3. Doctor Strange could have his own movie in Phase 4. Phase 4 could be Doctor Strange, Ant Man 2, Inhumans, Guardians 3 and Hulk 2. I think it would be fitting to introduce the Submariner in Hulk 2: they could fight and then team up to stop an Atlantean invasion. Dormandu could be the big bad in Avengers 4, the Submariner could get his own movie in Phase 5 and Avengers 5 should have a big fight amongst the Avengers, the Inhumans, the Deviants, the Atlanteans and the Lemurians. Avengers 6 could do a Homage to the Masters of Evil and the Acts of Vengence series with Thanos, Dormandu, Loki, Maximus, Karthon, Kro and Attuma joining forces and with the Avengers also having to face Ultron and the Abomination again. One day Marvel will get back the rights to X-Men and Spiderman and we'll have a Hulk versus Wolverine movie and an Iron Man / Spiderman movie. The biggest threat for Marvel is that they will one day reboot the Avengers with an all new cast and it will be a massive flop because Marvel got it right the first time and people don't need to see the same movies with new actors.

Hard to be excited for part 2 before seeing part 1

I'm keeping an open mind about GOTG. I don't know anything about them, and the movie could be good or bad. However, if we're being honest, all comic books are started with the plan to be a franchise to make the studio money, so to think GOTG would be different is stupid. Even if the lesser ones, like Fantastic Four or Ghost Rider somehow get a sequel. But Marvel's track record has been mostly good so far.

It's such a shame that Marvel rented out so many of their first tier characters.

Doctor Strange? Ant Man? Black Panther? Just imagine the films we might be getting if they had ALL their characters back under one roof.
Civil War? Secret Wars? A good X-Men film? Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, etc.
It sucks that we are FINALLY getting Marvel films the way they should be done (Avengers) but without many of their best characters. I am holding out hope that the new Fantastic Four reboot implodes, and the rights revert back to Marvel. Then it's just a waiting game until they

Maybe I can take my grandkids to see "Marvel Superheroes Secret Wars" in April, 2031.

if Ant Man kicks off phase 3 in summer 2015...

when does Avengers 2 come out? are they ending Phase 2 and starting Phase 3 in the same summer? what's the point of these Phase classifications anyways if we can just expect at least one Marvel movie every summer until 2021?

I think it's just a word that makes it look like they're in control and have a plan. "Phase"s are for masterminds who have everything figured out. The word inspires confidence. It's a perfect way to hide the fact that they're flying by the seat of their pants ;P

If Marvel doesn't give Black Panther a feature film, which would be a damn shame, then it needs to go the Netflix series route.

Makes sense, it seems like a waste opening up a whole galactic movie-verse with multiple mad characters and restrain it into one solo film. If true it must mean that they are really happy with how it's looking. Besides it seems to me the Guardians should seriously connect with the rest of the Marvel universe to truly justify it's existence.

I'm like 99% sure this isn't true

Several news outlets ran stories I think this past summer from "trusted sources" that Guardians was going to be a one-off and if I remember right I think Feige has made comments along the same lines. I'm almost positive that Phase 3 will be Ant-Man, Captain America 3, Thor 3, Dr. Strange, either Black Panther or most likely Inhumans, and then Avengers 3. Marvel has outright confirmed that they're working on all of those, they just haven't officially announced them as being part of Phase 3, they

Dr. Strange and Black Panther

I'm hesitant for them to try the Hulk as a reboot AGAIN, meanwhile Dr. Strange holds so much potential to be an a-typical Comic Book Movie and Black Panther is just cool.

Discounting the first Iron Man

Phase 1 had
The Incredible Hulk
Iron Man 2
Thor
Captain America
Concluding with Avengers

Phase 2 gave us
Iron Man 3 (sequel)
The Dark World (sequel)
The Winter Soldier (sequel)
Guardians of the Galaxy (original, replacing Hulk)
Concluding with Age of Ultron

Phase 3 (I believe) will give us
Ant-Man (original, replacing Iron Man)
Thor 3 (last sequel?)
Guardians 2
Captain America 3 (last sequel?)
Concluding with Avengers 3

Maybe solo Hulk or maybe Black Panther solo film replacing Thor/cap

See what I mean? Think I'm right?

Also, on a side note - I reckon they'll tie Black Panther into a Captain America film, but if could be way off on that

My one suggestion to this is replacing one of the 3s with Doctor Strange. I remember several rumors circling around about Dr. Strange being the intended replacement for Iron Man, rather than Ant Man. So unless something new popped up about that, it's more likely that Strange will be in Phase 3, and either Thor 3 or Cap 3 will be held off till Phase 4.

I'm all about Guardians but have to admit letdown upon finally scrolling down to the Guardians 2 reveal.

And am I the only one wanting a kickass Black Widow solo flick helmed by a kickass action director? Gareth Evans anyone?

planet Hulk

I'd still like to see one. I think that's the best use of the Hulk. They'd have to do some changing around from the comics (ie no Illuminati {or at least not with the original line up}, and more Banner since I don't think Ruffalo would be thrilled) but those are work arounds. And perhaps after whatever the plot of GotG and Avengers2 end up being it would be way easier to actually shoot Hulk into space. Maybe with help of Earth's new alien alliances? Just thoughts.

Cheating their bank account or over saturating audiences? We're getting Iron Man in Age of Ultron and one can assume Avengers 3. We're still getting a lot of Iron Man, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Glad to see they're banking on GOTG to succeed. I'm not entirely familiar with them at all, never read any comics, but everything I've seen so far looks amazing. Can't wait to see it next year.
If they're sticking to the 5 film per phase plan, I would hope they would try to branch out and do Black Panther. But in all honesty it looks like the slate has already been decided: GOTG 2, Ant-Man, Avengers 3 and Cap 3 and Thor 3. But then again, wasn't Jon Hamm confirmed for the role of Dr.

Always thought he was kind of a lame character anyways.

Is it too much to hope for a Hulk movie? I need more Mark Ruffalo in my life. Another Captain America film would be great, as would Doctor Strange, like many are saying.

I'm unsure about Thor 3--while I love the character, I found Thor 2 to be VERY lacking and it kind of killed my hopes that they can make a film that does him justice. The first was good, but I thought Thor 2 would take it to another level! For me, that did not happen.

Not suprising

If GOTG is a success, which I'm sure it will be, then they want to keep the ball rolling with a sequel relatively soon--especially to likely setup the events of The Avengers 3. And if they are going to keep up with the trend of releasing two Marvel movies a year, I could easily see Dr. Strange or Black Panther getting a late summer or autumn release date, and 2017 getting Thor 3 and Captain America. 2018 will have The Avengers 3 and possibly Captain Marvel or Ms. Marvel or Ant-Man 2. There's

And why does Guardians of the Galaxy get a sequel, and the Incredible Hulk (who everyone loved in The Avengers) doesn't. After The Avengers, we have only seen him for about 30 seconds in two films.

Unless Whedon uses him in a much bigger capacity this time for Avengers 2, I would say that the use of the Hulk right now is pretty disappointing.

While I 100% agree, financially they've never been booming successes unlike the other films. Domestically they barely made their budget back if I'm not mistaken and barely made a profit worldwide. Or what the studios consider a profit. Incredible Hulk was great, my only problem I ever had with the film wasn't the story or anything of that nature. It pissed me off the CGI artists couldn't keep Hulk in proportion to his surroundings. Sometimes he'd be as big as a house, other times he'd barely

I think the idea with Hulk, and Marvel probably knows this, is that his appeal came from his interaction with the Avengers. In a solo film, all we can ever really expect is the same plot of Bruce Banner running from the military, turning into Hulk for a few action sequences, a final showdown, and at the end of the movie he escapes again. Perhaps they'll throw in a new angle where one of his enemies (all are very unknown to general audiences) as a plot point. But that's all they really have

Perhaps they'll throw in a new angle where one of his enemies (all are very unknown to general audiences) as a plot point. But that's all they really have to go on, especially since they already made clear that they don't want to do a Planet Hulk or World War Hulk film.

I know it sucks, but I think Hulk in the MCU is a character that will always be most interesting when he's with the Avengers. As such, not much point in turning out a solo flick when there's so many other characters to explore.

Theyre really betting a lot on Guardians for a property that the vast majority of audiences had never heard of until the movie was announced or wont know about until they see a commercial

I want Phase 3 to be Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Incredible Hulk 2, Thor 3, Captain America 3. That would be a pretty epic lead up to one of the most anticipated film of all time, Avengers 3.

Extra tidbit: Doctor Strange. They've gone to space, Norse mystic land. Now they need to go to the Spiritual world.

It's about time that they do visit the Spiritual World. I thought the perfect tie in would have been with Iron Man 3 with the Mandarin since I guess his rings could be considered spiritual as well.

And another poster on here (I forget who) had a great idea with the secret scene after Iron Man 3. When Banner says he isn't the right type of doctor....which could have easily foreshadowed Doctor Strange or possibly how maybe Banner knew of Doctor Strange from before.

Oh wow, I never thought of that sentence until now. Kudos to you and whoever posted that in the first place.
