Showbizz 411 has learned that production will start on Rupert Wyatt's GAMBIT starring Channing Tatum as the ragin' Cajun this October in New Orleans, while the Louisiana Economic Development’s “Fast Lane” website is estimating that the film will cost $154 million, with $111 million being spent on the Louisiana production, and $28 million of that going towards employees in the area. That's a pretty big budget for a movie based on a fan favorite, but not necessarily well-known comic book character, and to be honest, I was expecting it be more in $80 to $100 million range.

The casting report Showbizz 41 was sent for a 20th Century Fox film called "Chess" (which will likely be the working title while filming), also has descriptions of several characters who will be in GAMBIT. Based on the descriptions below, which other possible comic book characters do you think will appear in the movie?

Louis– Male, any ethnicity, 40s-50s. Elegant and intelligent. An appealing entrepreneur with an unexpected
dark side.

Vera– Female, any ethnicity, mid 20s – early 30s. Beautiful, smart, tough, fiery and unpredictable.

Wes– Male, any ethnicity, mid 20s – mid 30s. Aspirational but weak minded. Soulful and sensitive.

Fritz– Male, any ethnicity, 40s – 50s. A professional thief. Charismatic con-artist. Warm hearted but untrustworthy.

Nash– Male, any ethnicity, mid 20s – early 30s. A potent threat. Heir to his mother’s business. Malevolent.

Willhelm– Male, any ethnicity, 30s. Dangerous street criminal. Protective and loyal to his family. Intensely loyal and violent.

Gary– Male, any ethnicity, mid 20s – early 30s. A little simple; dim-witted and passive.

Nonna—Female, any ethnicity, mid 20s – 30 years old. Uptight, corporate, vicious, sexual.

Joe– Male, any ethnicity, 30s. He’s a gun for hire. He is the black sheep of his family. Not from good breeding but from a working class family.

Ben–Male, any ethnicity, 20s. Just reaching adulthood. A street kid, a disaffected outsider, an orphan.

Boris–Male, Hispanic, 20s. Charming, handsome, and dangerous..

Clarissa– Female, mixed race, 10 – 12 years old. Ethereal and other worldly. Very expressive.

Wolfgang– Male, authentic French, 40s. A French criminal. Must speak fluent French.

Howard– Male, Caucasian. 50s. A refined European mobster who speaks fluent French.

GAMBIT is scheduled to open on October 7, 2016.

Leave it to Fox...

To set up a movie for failure. 154 million!? WHY? You know what that sound is? The possibility of sequels fleeing the scene.

Well they can kiss that $154M goodbye. Casting Channing Tatum as Gambit was a horrible idea. Not sure what they were thinking. Guy has the facial expression of wood. Kristen Stewart would be a good addition to this movie.

"Unlike other Gambits, I can speak with a genuine Cajun accent!"

I suspect that budget is way off, especially since Channing Tatum's bankability took a major hit with MAGIC MIKE XXL. But hopefully this film will help me forget about Taylor Kitsch's atrocious take on the character.

Well, they are pretty sure of themselves. We haven't seen anything to remotely get us excited and this is the budget they're throwing at this. Maybe keep a solo Gambit movie on the same scale as Deadpool, until you've established this character.

Don't think a budget of that size for this project is necessary

Gambit isn't Wolverine so a budget of over $100 million is a very risky strategy for Fox to tackle. I would think a budget in the ballpark of $70-80 million would be more practical, but who knows, this could end up being a success with the right marketing strategy.

I'm really surprised the budget is that large for this particular superhero. Gambit is a fan favorite (like Deadpool), but even with the Deadpool film the budget isn't too out of control and should be able to make its budget back.

I just hope this film can bring something great in terms of quality since (in my opinion) this is my least anticipated comic book film of next year. Gambit is one of my favorite comic book characters, but am not sold that Tatum was the right choice to play him.

Going to be honest, I'm not the least bit interested in this movie. But that is a hefty price tag for a solo superhero flick that is on a smaller scale than Superman or Batman.

Whoa, $154 million? That's quite a huge budget for one solo superhero movie.

Either they know they've got a pretty sweet story on their hands...or those reported figures are very wrong.
