Halle Berry, Tom Hanks and Natalie Portman in the Wachowskis' next: Cloud Atlas

Nov. 29, 2010by:

We've heard tiny scraps over the past year about the Wachowskis' clandestine futuristic cinéma vérité gay war romance (whew) COBALT NEURAL 9, but it sounds like their next project will be a different ambitious sci-fi project.

While promoting her film FRANKIE AND ALICE, actress Halle Berry let slip that she would work with the Wachowskis next summer on a movie that she says is "sort of what they did for THE MATRIX, they have another really amazing idea that's going to stretch our brains even further."

Berry says the movie also features Tom Hanks and Natalie Portman, verifying that it's the $80 million adaptation of David Mitchell’s novel CLOUD ATLAS -- earlier in the year the project was pursuing the trio, along with Ian McKellan and James McAvoy. At the time, Tom Tykwer (RUN LOLA RUN) was going to direct and the Wachowskis just produce and/or contribute a segment to the film, but now it sounds like they may be directing the entire thing.

The book involves multiple characters across different time frames, and is described by Amazon as so: "Mitchell's virtuosic novel presents six narratives that evoke an array of genres, from Melvillean high-seas drama to California noir and dystopian fantasy. There is a naïve clerk on a nineteenth-century Polynesian voyage; an aspiring composer who insinuates himself into the home of a syphilitic genius; a journalist investigating a nuclear plant; a publisher with a dangerous best-seller on his hands; and a cloned human being created for slave labor. These five stories are bisected and arranged around a sixth, the oral history of a post-apocalyptic island, which forms the heart of the novel. Only after this do the second halves of the stories fall into place, pulling the novel's themes into focus: the ease with which one group enslaves another, and the constant rewriting of the past by those who control the present."

Extra Tidbit: Do you still have any faith the Wachowskis can return to MATRIX greatness?

Sounds okay...

But does anyone else get a real Southland Tales-esque batshit crazy feel from this? I'm just trying to understand the synopsis... Oh well, sounds pretty good.

Tom Hanks isn't the guy with syphilis, right?

So they're scrapping "Cobalt 9" or whatever?

That automatically gives this the green. Jesus fuck, what an awful idea that shit was.

This new project sounds interesting, but its def going in the "wait and see" category.

Hit or Miss

You never know what your going to get with The Wachowski Bros. The Matrix was incredible, The Matrix Reloaded was ok but lost the feel of the original, Revolutions was a disaster. I know they didn't direct V for Vendetta, but I thought it was a very average movie and surprisingly I dug Speed Racer. Now I think this could be their return to great film making, but I think that gay future military movie sounds terrible.

Ofourse they can!

Everyone knows The Matrix changed the game in a lot of ways. I believe these two filmmakers have at least a few more great films to make. They've really only made one film after The Matrix, those sequels were pure money grabs. And I don't blame them. Because of that trilogy, they are financially set for life. How can people be mad at them for that. And Speed Racer was good not great. They can do better, and will do batter. Watch.

The Wachowskis'

About as overrated as they come. Bound, The Matrix, and The Matrix Reloaded are the only films they've directed that are worth a damn, with the first two I listed being the only great ones. Now, having two great films under your belts is quite an accomplishment, but the last two they've directed have been horrible (four, if you count the abysmal video games), and they've created pretty much the worst end to a major trilogy in movie history. These two have to show me something else before I get

I'd much rather have Tom Tykwer. By itself, Run Lola Run is better than the whole Matrix trilogy combined.

A nice collage of actors, an interesting plot, and Wachowskis are directing... well it seems like this is headed down the path to become an interesting movie.

I have faith that this will be good. The Matrix trilogys is one of the best around (Revolutions was my favorite) and Speed Racer was a solid, misunderstood flick which I enjoyed the hell out of.

This is more of the Wachowski brothers' style. I really didn't like Speed Racer, and no it wasn't for it's cartoony effects. I like the concept of multiple stories happening--especially when each is just as unique as the last. And on top of it all, the casting so far sounds great.

I loved Speed Racer. I think it's a totally flawed movie with a lot I would change about it but it was one of the most visually entertaining movies I've seen. This is good news, the Wachowskis got way too much backlash as of late imo.

Ya know

Just saw Speed Racer again on cable, and I think the movie was just ahead of it's time. I didn't care for it much when it was released, but it's grown on me - and it would have been spec-friggin-tacular in 3D (I said it, screw all ya monocular stereoscopiphobes).

I don't know how well Cloud Atlas will translate to film. But I'm glad to hear the Wachowskis are working on something other than Cobalt Neural 9. Not because there's anything wrong with the homosexuality sub-plot, the movie just sounded stupid.

Speed Racer

I went in preparing to really hate it, but after watching the Speed Racer Bluray, I found myself wanting to watch it again. I honestly really dug it.

I'm one of the few that saw Speed Racer in theaters and of the even fewer that liked it. I hope the Wachowskis hit this out of the park so that everyone can go back to liking them because I certainly still do.
