It's a British invasion: Malcolm Tucker is the new Dr. Who! Sherlock season 3 teaser!

Dr. Who

Some big British television news was released over the weekend and since one of the items you've probably already heard about (I'm sure your Facebook/Twitter/etc. blew up when the news was announced like mine did) I figured I'd throw the other one in as well that you might have missed.

The biggest announcement (of course) was BBC revealing the new Dr. Who: Mr. Peter Capaldi.

Many of you might know the actor from the BBC show Torchwood but to me he'll always be Malcolm Tucker from The Thick of It, and while I'm not a Dr. Who fanatic I may have to check the new ones out because of my love for Capaldi. Unfortunately, I doubt he'll be using as colorful language as he did on The Thick of It while talking to his companion:

Peter Capaldi's first appearance as Dr. Who will be in the 2013 Christmas special, and I've already heard people bitching that Capaldi is too old for the part or that they would rather see Benedict Cumberbatch as the new Doctor. To those people I have this to say: Capaldi is a fantastic actor and a great addition to the long running series. As for Cumberbatch, he's just too big now to be Dr. Who and to be honest he's probably better off not playing the Doctor. Speaking of Benedict Cumberbatch...

Sherlock

BBC also released a teaser for season 3 of Sherlock starring Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. It's definitely a tease and nothing more but just the Sherlock theme song was enough for me to get excited for the new season, although there still isn't a date for when it will air. Curses!

Extra Tidbit: What do you guys think of the Dr. Who news? And how many more seasons of Sherlock do you think there will be since Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have become so popular?

He's got the right stuff. Quick line delivery, awkward, animated physicality. But I will miss his profanity-laced barbs.

Reckon he's a great choice - honestly never believed the rumours it'd be him, so shows what i know, but he's gotta be a step in the right direction for the series - too many young heartthrob actors in the role with potential romances with the companions, not really what the show should ever have been about even if it has built up the audience somewhat. Matt Smith's last series was a disappointment - lackluster episodes building up the excellent finale - it ended really well, but was pretty dull

I didn't dislike Matt Smith, but through-series quality control is an issue they need to address.
I'd like to think things'll get a bit more intelligent under Capaldi - time will tell.

Today, it hit me why they introduced the New Doctor as such

And BojacRedleif nailed it: He's not young and cute for all the fangirls. So, rather than lose a chunk of their fan base on Christmas, they let em down gently. Well played BBC. That said, Capaldi is going to hit this out of the park! I hope Moffat puts the doctor in more gritty / mindf*ck stories like he did with Tennant.

As For Sherlock, it seems imminent that the growing fame of the two stars could DELAY this show for any amount of time. But, I'd bet they'd come back to it. Eventually,

A live, worldwide broadcast of the unveiling is hardly letting them down gently. They're all sitting in front of the TV, squeeing away for hours to the amusement of their friends and family and then... WTF?! OLD MAN?!

@ schwarzgerät lol well gently in regards to the time they'd have before X-mas. But yeah, I'd imagine young fangirls already figured the new Doctor to be some teen magazine dreamboat, and them BAM. I ought to look up reaction vids on youtube.

All the teen girls are mad because they lost their hot Doctors.

"... I guess this one is ... kinda hot? In a 'he'd pay for my college if I sat in his lap and let him videotape me in the shower' kind of way..."
I so wanted a scraggly old man to be 12. This is going to be awesome.

Glad they're going with a slightly older gentleman. I thought it was a very real possibility that the next Doctor would be 19 or something.

Capaldi, an actor who can do anything. Casting him is the best thing the series has done since casting Eccleston. Good luck to the man and long may he pilot the TARDIS.

I really wish they would have had Eccleston for a longer period.

Seconded. He was exactly the calibre of actor needed to punch DW back to the top of the ratings upon its relaunch. I only wish he could have coped with the schedule better (or whatever it was that really caused him to leave).
