J.J. Abrams says Super 8 has nothing to do with Cloverfield

Just yesterday, it seemed like the entire movie web was going back and forth on this top secret J.J. Abrams trailer for the codenamed SUPER 8. Is it a prequel to CLOVERFIELD? Some sort of a sequel? Is it actually the upcoming collaboration with Steven Spielberg we heard about last week? Many questions, many unsubstantiated answers.

But today, New York Magazine’s Vulture – who themselves spilled the beans on the contents of the super duper secret trailer, whose “reliable sources” claimed it was related to CLOVERFIELD – now have word directly from Abrams himself saying that… it has NOTHING to do with CLOVERFIELD. Here’s Abrams talking to Vulture:

“You have to check [out the trailer],” he told us. “But it has nothing whatsoever to do with Cloverfield, despite your expert reporting.” So what does it have to do with? “I won’t be able to tell you until it’s done,” he said.

To be fair to The Internet, after Vulture’s report on the contents of the trailer – which sounds pretty much exactly like CLOVERFIELD – you can’t blame anyone for making the correlation. The question, however, still remains: WTF is SUPER 8? I think that’s exactly how J.J. wants it.
