Joss Whedon still wants to make a Black Widow movie

07.26.2016

It seems like only yesterday we were talking about how Joss Whedon had a problem with the state of modern blockbusters. Oh, wait, that was only yesterday. Well, though I can’t imagine his stance has changed, those opinions may not exactly rule him out of the blockbuster game for good, as there’s one badass hero he still wants to do justice: Black Widow.

Speaking with IGN, Whedon dished on how much he wants to do a Widow movie, giving it a sort of JASON BOURNE treatment:

If someone pointed at me and said, 'Do you wanna make a Black Widow movie?' the answer would be, 'duh'. I think that character really is very interesting and very earthbound, so it's the kind of action that I got to do less of with somebody like Thor or The Vision. When you get into your Superman territory, it's harder to maintain the gritty action that the Russo brothers do so brilliantly, and she's got that kind of thing and [you can] really do a spy thriller. Like really do a good, paranoid, 'John le Carré on crack' sort of thing. That would be really fun.

But even Whedon is grounded enough to admit there’s more than one reason he wants to do a Widow movie, and it’s one I’m sure we could all respect:

Scarlett Johansson is just delightful. She works really hard, but she just spends most of her time cracking me up, so it would be a fun shoot.

In the same interview, Whedon mentioned a new screenplay he was working on, but it sounded like nothing fanboys would clamor over:

Every movie I've directed has been an adaptation of something that has already existed, so I am working on an original screenplay that is not that. I can't say much about it, but I hope it's a step forward.

A Black Widow movie is something the world desperately needs, not only for the sake of more DARK KNIGHT-level, grounded superhero movies, but because of the shocking lack of female heroes getting their own marquee. Ever since the hubbub last year over Widow not getting her own action figure along with the other male heroes for AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, the world has demanded that female heroines get as much respect as the boys do. I think a Widow movie would not only be very progressive for women in the genre, but would also be wholly unique as a smaller spy thriller, juxtaposed alongside the massive-scaled AVENGERS movies. Simply put, it would be f@cking badass, and Whedon would make it just so.

Then we have a flashback to Natasha training as a child. The flashback ends with the Black Widow going on her first mission and performing her first kill.

In the present day, Everett Ross shows up at Avengers HQ. Natasha asks him why he is there. He says he wants to see the Scarlet Witch. She tells him that she isn't there. Natasha gives him a suspicious look.

Now we get a montage of the Black Widow doing evil things for the KGB. At the end of the montage, Hawkeye shoots her with arrows and immobilizes her. Hawkeye moves in for the kill and Natasha says "What are you waiting for? Finish me!" and Hawkeye says "I'm making another call."

Natasha questions Everett Ross. She suspects Everett Ross is a Hydra mole. She asks him a series of questions and when he slips up he pulls out a knife and attacks her. Natasha kills him in self defense.

Budapest, 2006. Hawkeye and the Black Widow need to steal a biological weapon that an ex-KGB agent is trying to sell on the black market. They get their hands on the weapon but an alarm goes off. "We need to move!" Natasha says. "It's too late," Clint says. "We've got company."

Natasha is being questioned by authorities. She says she killed Everett Ross in self defense. They review the security cameras. Natasha is telling the truth. She is cleared of any wrong doing.

Hawkeye and the Black Widow fight their way out and manage to reach their extraction point with the biological weapon. "You did good today," Hawkeye tells her. "Good," she says. "I have a lot to make up for."

The final scene before the credits has Nick Fury telling Black Widow that Everett Ross was an impostor. His DNA, apparently, did not match the DNA of his parents. Unfortunately, a blood sample they obtained from a few years ago shows that he had been switched with the real Everett Ross before he even got involved with the Avengers. It's a complete mystery who is behind this.

End credit scene has an unnamed villain (who will later be given the name Michael Korvac) in a futuristic setting. He laments that Everett Ross was unable to kill the Scarlet Witch. "The time for subtlety has passed," he says.

Just curious, but has ScroJo ever said she wants a solo Black Widow movie? I feel she has the clout to make it happen if she wanted it. She's played this character 5 times in the last 7 years, and will be playing it another 2 times at least. That's a long time to play 1 part, not to mention the intense training she goes through just for her supporting role in the other movies. I'm not sure she'd want to do a solo film in place of focusing on other roles.

I've always been on the fence about a Black Widow movie because I think it opens a can of worms. So then why not also make a Hawkeye movie, or a Scarlet Witch movie, or a Vision movie, or a Falcon movie, or a Nick Fury movie, or a Maria Hill movie, etc, etc.......

Your argument also extends to why not also make a Cap movie... an Iron man movie... etc. With each character there are risks and rewards associated with giving them their own film. I think there's enough commentary online to show that enough people want a Black Widow movie. I don't think the research would say the same for all other female characters or many other Avengers. I think the biggest demand is definitely for Hulk and Black Widow.

Wish this would be put on a fast track

Scarlett playing Black Widow in a spy thriller ala John le Carré / Winter Soldier / with a dash of James Bond moments playing off of her using her sex appeal, Marvel needs to green light this now. Ever since her Winter Soldier performance I've been excited by the idea.

Whedon would be a great writer for it but bring in a true action director who knows the genre.

A few things:

1. Nothing he said in either article is contradictory. He was right yesterday, and he's right today. Not even a huge Whedon fan, just saying.
2. I think it's important to give a project to a director who truly wants to handle the character, as opposed to the studio hiring a director for their name. I have no doubt Whedon would do Black Widow justice.
3. However, with that said, I doubt Marvel would let Whedon direct again. They're a press machine and he wasn't very press-friendly when it

4. Regardless of director, a Bourne-style Black Widow movie sounds BADASS.

I even posted in a previous article that I would love to see Whedon come back and direct one more film for Marvel, and based on his strong material and experience with female characters, he would be absolutely perfect for a Black Widow solo film or Captain Marvel.

It really is a no brainer at this point considering how popular Black Widow is at this point in the MCU storyline and how big, sexy, beautiful, and successful Johansson is as an actress at this point of her career.

He should do it. I was just watching Winter Soldier when at the beginning of the film Widow picks up Cap from the park. The eye flirting and smile she gives Falcon is the most badass shit in that movie. Almost like a, "I bet you wish you were coming with us." Also the fact that she seems to be the one Avenger most of the team goes to for guidance in troubled times. Do it, Whedon, do it!

It's embarrassing that it's taking this long

For Marvel/Disney to have a female led superhero movie with DC dropping Wonder Woman next year and a likely Gotham Sirens and standalone Harley Quinn set of films over the next few years, Marvel needs to step up their game.

A BLACK WIDOW solo movie would be a no-brainer

Leaving aside the fact that Scarlett Johansson is arguably the most bankable actresses on the planet, a Black Widow movie would bring a whole different dimension to the Marvel universe. I could see a great Le Carré-style spy thriller with Black Widow in the lead.

If she's as badly written as she was in Age of Ultron then no thank you

She was also pregnant during AOU so they had to limit what she can do.
