Kevin Feige on Doctor Strange's powers, which include "screwing with time"

12.29.2015

With DOCTOR STRANGE on the horizon, we'll soon be witnessing a whole new magical side of the Marvel universe. The upcoming film will follow the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige spoke with Entertainment Weekly and laid out a few of the magical abilities that Dr. Strange will wield in the film.

He can do a whole host of things, eventually, he does cast spells, which in the comics have very sort of tongue-twisty fun names. We don’t want to shy away from that, because that’s what makes Doctor Strange Doctor Strange. He has a Cloak of Levitation that allows him to fly, but he doesn’t fly like Superman or like Thor. It’s almost got a consciousness of its own, this cloak, which, again, gives us a superhero with a red cape — which we’ve seen a few times — but allows us to do it in a wholly unique and wholly original way. He can create these mandalas of light that he can use as shields and he can use as sort of weapons. He can create portals that will open before your eyes that he can step through and go to other places around the world. And frankly, even in this film, we’ll only touch upon what a lot of his powers are.

With so many abilities under his cloak it's only natural that DOCTOR STRANGE will introduce a few new ones to the Marvel universe, such as time-travel, which Kevin Feige says will play a part in the story rather than just function as a flashy visual effect.

The Cloak of Levitation [and] the Eye of Agamotto are his two signature pieces. In this film, the Eye is a very important relic that can be quite dangerous if used in the wrong hands, because it has the ability to do any number of things, the most dangerous of which is, it can sort of manipulate probabilities. Which is also another way of saying, ‘screw around with time’ — which is part of our story.

DOCTOR STRANGE is set for a November 4, 2016 release.

Eye of Agamotto

So he has the Time Stone... I figured that much. Wouldn't make sense for Panther to find it. I just wonder if Dr. Strange is going to be in Infinite Wars. There hasn't been news on the actors involvement yet and the late filming of this movie makes me worry it might be a one film deal.

"he does cast spells, which in the comics have very sort of tongue-twisty fun names." Hopefully one of those words isn't penguin.

Oh well

I thought they'd give Doc the Soul stone and maybe Panther would find the Time stone. This makes things rather interesting.

It's the same as the comics go though right Conman? These fuckers always come back lol. We can't forget these ARE comic book movies. I do get your point though however i'd rather have a straight up villain survive once.

No need for the Stone for this one...
They explained that his powers included accelerated organism. So basically and theoretically, he could heal from a lethal wound before it kills him...
In the cased of AoU, they could just say that because of the extend of the wounds, his body went to a 'coma looking like death' state to give him time to heal, and SHIELD decided not to share the news with the team, considering they could use his sister in the meantime !

I know they have to do this.....

but I'm not a fan of time travel either (unless it's handled VERY carefully) They need to do the minimum possible (maybe because no one knows how to properly use the gem until a certain Titan gets his hands on it).

I love Cumberbatch as an actor, I think he looks perfect for the role, and I can't wait to hear that booming voice casting spells. I like everything about this, yet I'm a little nervous that they're going to go too far. Magic needs to have practical limits, otherwise Strange

Magic needs to have practical limits, otherwise Strange is more powerful than all the other Avengers combined (including the ones who just left the group). They need to be careful not to go too far out where this becomes like the bad Superman (where he can do anything and doesn't need anyone's help for any enemy).

I'm not really a fan of how some films treat time travel, such as Superman, Harry Potter 3, and some of the Star Trek films. Once you introduce time travel, it feels like the stakes are gone since anyone can now go back in time and fix something. Or they ignore it completely in sequels. I like movies that are about the idea of time travel, but those that just throw it around sometimes feels like a cheap trick to me. It all depends on the execution.
