M. Night Shyamalan's next is a sci-fi project with Will Smith

10.20.2010

If you thought THE LAST AIRBENDER might have made a ding in filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan's Hollywood status, not even close.

Shyamalan is teaming up with megastar Will Smith for a sci-fi project called ONE THOUSAND A.E., to be produced by Smith's company Overbrook.

The story is being kept top secret (though you can infer a futuristic tale from the title) and the script comes from Gary Whitta, which you might consider good news if you appreciated THE BOOK OF ELI more than Shyamalan's own recent original writing like THE HAPPENING.

Ah, and in true Shyamalan fashion, here's the twist: It's actually being developed as a starring vehicle for Will's kid Jaden Smith, not the A-lister himself. So, hope you liked THE KARATE KID. (I kinda did.)

Extra Tidbit: I genuinely hope Shyamalan still has a good movie in him... just written by someone else.

Let The Hating Commence

I'm going to Defend Shyamalan! Yes, his writing isn't always the best thing, but as a director, he's excellent. His visual style is amazing, and all his films LOOK great, with evocative camera moves, etc., so as long as he's not writing it, I'm all over this like a hobo on a ham sandwich.

yeah sci-fi

After Earth. So 1000 yrs After Earth dies I suppose. I think he has crazy talent but his ego gets in the way of that. Hopefully Smith being a drama queen will help level them out.

It offends me that this guy still gets work (M. Night, not Will Smith).

Hells Yeah

Cool. Maybe Shyamalan will get some credit where it's due if the Smiths are involved. Hell to the yeah.

WHY?

Honestly, how does M. Night Shyamalan keep getting the green light to make movies?! I hate to be cynical but the guy hasn't made anything decently good since Signs… As of right now I'd trust Michael Bay over M. Night Shyamalan when it comes to directing. Shyamalan really needs to step it up! I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

I still think Night has it in him to make a great movie, and not for nothing, but at least he takes chances with his films and tries to do something original. All you guys do is bitch about remakes and a lack of originality in film making but then you crucify the guy when he attempts something that doesn't completely pan out. I can think of plenty of great film makers who have made a flop or two. Let's name them for fun.

Cool, can't wait.
Just pathetic how people always jump on the bandwagon and.. well, we're now in a Shyamalan hate time..
But yeah, some of the greatest movies made by him and actually no movie was bad at all.

Damn...

I was all for Will and M.Night's first collaboration but I just can't see this being a good idea. Loved the Karate Kid so its nothing against Jaden.. Hmmm gotta wait for a trailer i guess.

Inception is required...

The team must enter Shyamalan's dreams and somehow place the idea in his head that he needs to stop directing films and just produce.

Someone contact Tom Hardy!

Well either way this is going to make money, I'm just a little disappointed that it's starring Smith's son and not Smith himself.

No matter how many times Shyamalan keeps failing, my eyes still get big and I still get excited when I hear he has a movie coming out. I know he has the potential.

The Last Airbender sequels were canceled after the first film bombed. A Last Airbender reboot, on the other hand . . .

The Last Air Bender DID make money though, tons of money, considering it was made without any major star power. Look at most video game based movies or anime based movies like DOA or Doom or Dragonball. Those movies bombed. The movie didn't do well enough to warrant a sequel but studios think putting MNS's name on a movie poster still means something.

i would expect a sequel at some point, considering it has made $315m worldwide on a $150m budget. just probably without shyamalan as director.

M. Night Shyamalan is dead to me

after The Last Airbender. It was a foolproof property and he managed to mess it up.

I'm amazed studios and investors are still giving him money and projects.

Jaden Smith is young, but has potential. Hopefully he can work with a better director down the line.

KID IS OVERRATED

...he's a one dimensional actor... He got lucky with the remake KK! But come on, scifi for kids... sounds something you would fine on the Disney Channel!

This thing already reeks of shit.

M. Night (a product of nepotism) isn't that good anymore. He's delusional nowadays, and after Lady In The Water, I swore up and down that he wouldn't get another penny from me. When this comes out, I'll go see something else involving people that had to work their ass off to get to where they are. When people actually have something serious to lose, and aren't in some unimaginable comfort zone, it usually makes for better art.

I was all in until I read that It's starring Will's kid and not Will himself. I liked the Karate Kid, but I'm not gonna go to the theaters to see a film based upon a kid. It's gonna take a lot to get me to the theater.

Good Night, Shyamalan

And good riddance. What an amazingly amateurish way to screw up such a creative concept as Airbender. Forget about it.

Title is misleading

I don't like the equation of this movie. M. Night isn't great anymore and Will Smith's kid isn't going to put my ass in a seat. The Book of Eli was a solid movie thoug, but again not enough for me to go see this movie.
