Mark Hamill confirms alternate Star Wars: The Force Awakens opening scene

Back when STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS was still in development, BMD claimed that they had details on the opening sequence of the film, which would have followed Luke Skywalker's severed hand holding a lightsaber as it floated through space before landing on the planet Jakku.

Obviously we didn't get that in the movie, but during a conversation with The Sun, Mark Hamill confirmed that it was the original opening scene of Episode VII.

I can tell you now that in the original opening shot of 7, the first thing that came into frame was a hand with a lightsaber, a severed hand that enters the atmosphere, and then the hand and bone burns away and goes sticking into the surface of Jakku, and this alien hand comes in, don’t know if it was Maz but it was an alien hand who takes the light saber way, and then the movie proceeds as you see it.

At the time, I thought that it would have been a pretty cool way to start THE FORCE AWAKENS, but now I'm glad that J.J. Abrams and company decided to go in a different direction for the post-text crawl opening sequence of the film. Which opening scene do you prefer?

Filming is currently underway for the yet-to-be-subtitled STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII, which will arrive in theaters on December 15, 2017.

honestly, pretty much the only way the sabre could have been found is by accident with one of the Tibana mining platforms sucking it up and a worker finding it. and it somehow gets to Maz.

It's too tongue-in-cheek for Star Wars, but were it another franchise (say, Guardians of the Galaxy), that would've been a pretty hilarious opening.

Yeah, no...

Like some have said below, this would have been way too gruesome for Star Wars. Opening the movie with a severed hand? I'm so glad they decided to not run with it.

Glad they didn't go with this. It would've been an unnecessarily gruesome way to start the movie.

I'm glad they made that change. (1) That just would have been a confusing scene to open with. Especially since this movie served double duty on starting off a new trilogy as well as re-invigorating some life into the franchise. And (2) severered limbs just seem a little morbid for Star Wars. I know we've seen people's arms and other limbs get cut off. But there's never a focus on the severed limb. So doing a full on tracking shot of the hand through space and into Jakku's atmosphere

Well, there goes the Rey = Luke's hand clone theory.

It would be tough to start the film with a moment that makes you say "Wha? That doesn't make sense"

If this idea ever made sense to the movie's writers I'd love to have it properly explained, but it does seem like something visually interesting that just didn't work or make sense once they actually thought about it.

You're here to complain about a scene that they chose not to film?

Thx for noticing dreamer :)

I wasn't complaining. It was a response to Magnus. Which I thought was a funny yet valid point.
