Mark Hamill talks meeting with George Lucas about the new Star Wars trilogy

Nov. 1, 2012by: Paul Shirey

Apparently, Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, was privy to the news that George Lucas was planning on making a new Star Wars trilogy before all of us, although not the news that Lucas would be selling to Disney. Hamill, who predominantly does voice work (and has had an epic run as the Joker in various animated Batman projects, amongst others) caught up with Entertainment Weekly and shared these tidbits about meeting with Lucas, his own reaction to the news, and what, if anything, he knows about the new trilogy.

On his own reaction to Lucas selling to Disney:

"I had no idea that George was going to sell to Disney until I read it online like everybody else. He did tell us last summer about wanting to go on and do [Episodes] VII, VIII, and IX, and that Kathleen Kennedy would be doing them. He seems to be in a really good place. Hes really happy. And thats nice because I know that when we were making the movies, he was not a jolly guy on set. [Laughs] I always felt badly for him because he agonizes over details, and Im sure after imagining it in his head for so many years, to see it realized hed look up and just hang his head and groan. Harrison [Ford], Carrie [Fisher], and I were always trying to cheer him up and joke him out of his doom and gloom."

On Lucas revealing plans to make a new trilogy:

"...last August, he asked Carrie and I to have lunch with him and we did. I thought he was going to talk about either his retirement or the Star Wars TV series that Ive heard about...So when he said, We decided were going to do Episodes VII, VIII, and IX,I was just gobsmacked. What? Are you nuts?! [Laughs] I can see both sides of it. Because in a way, there was a beginning, a middle, and an end and we all lived happily ever after and thats the way it should be and its great that people have fond memories, if they do have fond memories. But on the other hand, theres this ravenous desire on the part of the true believers to have more and more and more material. Its one of those things: people either just dont care for it or are passionate about it. I guess that defines what cult movies are all about. Well see. Im anxious to know whats going on, but the main story [yesterday] was the sale to Disney. I have mixed feelings about that, but they havent done badly by Marvel and the Muppets and Pixar. Its one of those big decisions that at first seems unusual but then the more you look at it, the more it makes sense."

On what he knows about the new trilogy:

"...he was just talking about writers and the fact that he wouldnt be directing. I guess he wanted us to know before everybody else knew. He said, Now you cant tell anybody! [Laughs] Even now Im nervous about saying anything. I just dont know!"

It's always good to hear from Hamill, who is oftentimes very honest and open. As a kid, Hamill was kind of my hero, especially since RETURN OF THE JEDI was the first Star Wars film I saw in theaters that I was fully cognizant of what was going on (I was six at the time). Whether he's involved in the new trilogy or not, the man has left an indelible mark on the Star Wars legacy.

As the speculation train begins its long journey towards 2015, I'm sure there will be tons of news (and non-news) flooding the internet on a regular basis, but there's definitely a newfound interest. Obviously. Prior to this news, the most we could offer was a trailer for the animated Clone Wars, but that's about it. It'll be nice to share some solid Star Wars news, but rest assured I won't be inundating you with an update everytime Lucas farts in a room.

STAR WARS VII is set for release in 2015.

Extra Tidbit: Mark Hamill is also set to appear in Matthew Vaughn's adaptation of Mark Millar's The Secret Service as...Mark Hamill. No spoilers for those who read the comics!

I like the idea BuckNasty has. In a sense he's right.. Luke really is the only character that would "HAVE: to come back. FIsher has aged badly, and while having Ford come back would be awesome, I dont think he would do it or he would phone it in. Would they bring in characters from the books like Mara Jade? Han and Leia's kids? I dont think they can just ignore the book lore there's too much of it. I still go with the idea of recasting if they are going for a few years after Jedi story,

Well I have mixed emotions about this. The idea of the continuing story would be awesome!! I've always wanted to see that. I haven't read any of the books, but I would much rather see the continuing story of Luke, Han, Chewie, and Lea. I also heard that the books have Han and Lea's children in them as well, which would be cool to see. I REALLY doubt they could get Harrison back for this, and I think he's probably too old now anyway. Carie Fisher would have to lose some weight for this as well.

I would have liked to see a movie made between the third, and fourth films. They could then focus on Darth Vader which would be AWESOME!

Wooot!

I could kiss a wookie!
The fact that George is stepping aside is probably the greatest news for Star Wars since Return of the Jedi. I know that may sound harsh, but George is an idea man, not a Director. If his ego would have allowed someone else to direct the prequels they would have kicked major ass.
All I can hope now is that we can get on with getting some great new features produced.
It would be beyond awesome to see Hamill again even in a minor role, but the best news about all of

Hell for all I care he can stay connected at the hip to the property as long as the Director has the power to veto George if he gets off on one of his crazy tangents.

I think the Luke Skywalker character deserves a last hoorah. We never saw him become a Jedi Master. The whole trilogy is about him becoming a Jedi (like his father before him), I'd like to see him as a wise Jedi Master. I dont think he needs to be killed off, in fact I think it would be a shame to do so. I'd like to see him take on more of a leader role, the irony would be that is what the Emperor wanted, but on the other side of the coin. He can be a good presence like the Emperor was.

But the films should, and will (for the boxoffice and longevity) focus on a younger generation, OR, set the films after EPVI and recast the roles.
Either way they definitely will not focus on old Han, Luke and Leia.

Honestly Hamill is the only old cast member that NEEDS to be in these films. Does anyone really want to see an old, bloated Carrie Fisher running around? Plus after all the shit that Ford has talked about the films I would hate to see Disney shell out a ton of money for him to sleep walk his way through the films. Luke is the only one that needs to be there and Hamill is the only one of them that still has the passion and talent to pull it off. I imagine he's going to be in an Obi Wan type of

Bring Back Hamill!!

Have the first film focus on him, decades later training a new apprentice and searching for any remaining Jedi while his new academy is finding it's place in the new Republic. Luke discovers an exiled master from the old council that has fallen to the Dark Side and Luke is killed. Luke's apprentice must then rise to the challenge of being a full Jedi and leading the new knights against a powerful and dangerous foe.

Then margaritas for everyone!

Man I really hope he is going to return as an aged Luke Skywalker, grand master of the new Jedi order. heck even as a Force ghost. He just NEEDS to be in it. And Yoda could appear too.

Hm

I'd be interested in a film that is kind of along the lines of "The Force Unleashed" with more story developement of course. But I really enjoyed those games and how they incorporated the other films. What do you guys think? Yay or Nay?

When news of a new Star Wars trilogy was released, I assumed it would be a different story with different core characters set in the Star Wars universe, and that could still be the case, but it seems that since Lucas is talking to Hamill and Fisher, "Episodes 7, 8 and 9" could actually be, well, episodes VII, VIII and IX. George Lucas had initially planned a nine-episode or even twelve-episode film series, and it seems now he might have a chance to fulfill that wish of a new trilogy connected

How they're going to go about it, whether they'll use the same characters (is the meeting with Hamill a big clue?) and if they'll be recast...that's all up in the air now. Looking forward to hearing more, I definitely could get excited about Star Wars all over again!

If someone can still come up with good James Bond movies and good Planet of the Apes movies, Im certain that someone can come up with a good Star Wars movie. Theres been plenty of time for good ideas to be conjured up.

Please don't mess it up!

I don't want crazy CGI that looks horrible, I really want them to go back to their roots. Make this movie as if it were the 80s again with practical effects. A lot of the charm the first three had came from the realism of the fights, nobody was flying around doing crazy moves. On a smaller scale the original trilogy's story could be compared to a soldier fighting in WW1. Now this sequel needs to be like WW2, be about the effects of the end of the war.

Also, there wont be any Jedis left

Also, there wont be any Jedis left either, I mean there will be Luke and Leia, maybe they each have kids but thats it... So there would have to be a new threat, something greater than the sith because they are all dead as well...
