Martin Scorsese officially shooting Hugo Cabret in 3D

You’ve heard the rumors and now it’s been confirmed: Martin Scorsese will shoot his next film, THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABRET, in 3D. The key word in that sentence is that he’ll shoot the movies in 3D and not use the wonky conversion process that has caught hell in the past few months for movies like ALICE IN WONDERLAND and CLASH OF THE TITANS.

It’s strange to think of Scorsese as the director of a 3D kids movie but lately Scorsese has been more of a hired gun than someone who’s developing his own projects. And while I’m disappointed we’re getting less of the vintage Scorsese, I do love the fact that he’s out trying new things and consistently working.

The film, which will star Sacha Baron Cohen, Ben Kingsley, Chloe Moretz and Asa Butterfield, follows a young boy in Paris who lives in a train station and works to fix a robot ready to deliver a seemingly important message. John Logan, who worked with Scorsese on THE AVIATOR, wrote the script and Sony Pictures already has a December 9, 2011 release date planned.
