Matt Damon battles monsters in the trailer for The Great Wall

07.28.2016

Starring Matt Damon and directed by Zhang Yimou (HERO, HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS), THE GREAT WALL tells the story of an elite force making a valiant stand for humanity on the world’s most iconic structure. This marks not only the first English-language production for Yimou, but also the largest film ever shot entirely in China. It also marks the longest Matt Damon's hair has ever been. A lot of firsts, here! Check it out!

This project was originally under the directing hands of Edward Zwick before he moved on to do JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK (note that he has a screenwriting credit), although I'm not too worried about Yimou taking over. Judging by his filmography, he obviously has an eye for some amazing visual details. My only hope is that the story provided works. I'd hate to have another 47 RONIN on our hands.

THE GREAT WALL hits theaters on February 17, 2016.

This seems like the terrible movie an actor does right around the same time they get nominated for an Oscar in something else.

Just for fun, could the U.S. try making a movie about China where a Chinese person is the star?

China is making this movie just as much as America is as Legendary is partially owned by the Wanda Group in China.

Meh.....

Not a Damon fan (usually), and his deadpan delivery doesn't help with voice-over narration. That said, at least they did a nice job of not revealing too much of the "monsters" and what we did see looked solid. We'll see if the subsequent trailers improve or if this turns into another Attack On Titan.

While Zhang Yimou's a great director, I'm getting some real Dragon Blade vibes from this. And the CGI in Chinese movies is almost universally atrocious, so I don't have high hopes for the monsters. Eh, fingers crossed, I guess.

It's also kinda funny seeing Matt Damon and Andy Lau together, as they both played the same character in the Departed and Infernal Affairs. Random observation.

Seems like such an odd choice for Matt Damon. I'm not buying him fighting monsters and with the early release in China, it seems like this is a role just to pump up Damon there.

Matt Damon is - The One White Guy Who Can Save The Great Wall

Seriously, I love Zhang's movies, he has a great style that uses beautiful colors in his movies. But this is already coming off as typical trite Hollywood trash. The one white guy in China is going to do what the millions of Chinese people can't - Protect China. Great Story.

Oh it's ridiculous for sure, but it's actually not Hollywoord. The Chinese Film Group (kind of like the Chinese BBC but waaaaay bigger) teamed up with another Chinese Production Company and Producer Charles Rover (and the Chinese branch of his Legendary Pictures) to make this one. Just like American studios are starting to go more and more out oft heir way to ensure that their films will appeal to Chinese audiences, Chinese films are more often starting to cast American stars(Dragon Blade being one of the more infamous examples) in hopes of appealing to a western audience. It makes sense, they're the two largest film markets in the world, so if you want to create a truly global blockbuster, you need to appeal to both of them (or be Star Wars). I just hope that Chinese audiences don't find our attempts to include Chinese actors and locations in American blockbusters to be as convoluted and forced as we find this.

It comes off as deeply bizarre. Watching this really feels like a Chinese film that they just stuck a Hollywood star into. It would be like If you took Oldboy (couldn't think of a Chinese film off the top of my head), kept everything the same but cast Gary Oldman as the lead. It's just weird.

Excuse me?

Wait. I'm not clear on this critical point... Is Matt Damon supposed to be CHINESE?

First impression?

I'll pass. Might have been more interested had it starred an unknown lead; Damon's casting in this is a bit of a distraction for me.
