MGM will try to find Waldo for new film

11.07.2011

Really MGM? You go through all that financial turmoil, and your next move after getting all your other projects back on track is to go ahead and make a WHERE’S WALDO movie?

Yes, this is happening, as MGM President Jonathan Glickman explains:

“We are thrilled to be bringing the search for Waldo to the big screen. Along with our partners at Classic Media, we look forward to making a worldwide adventure that will appeal to Where’s Waldo? fans of all ages.”

Well, there you have it, a family friendly WHERE’S WALDO film is coming. What exactly that entails, I have no idea. Yes, the brand recognition is there, as Waldo is a recognizable face in a crowd, but what exactly was the plot of the dozens of Where’s Waldo books I read as a child? Uhhh, he likes to travel. He’s friends with a wizard. He’s being chased by an evil version of himself who wears opposite colors? He loses articles of clothing frequently? That’s all I’ve got.

So, how is this going to go?

Extra Tidbit: The “hard” Waldo puzzles literally almost drove me insane as a child.

I think it could be decent. Image Finding Nemo in a fantasy setting. Or like the short lived Waldo cartoon...nobody remembers that?

The cunning twist: Waldo only appears in a short scene after the end-credits. Alone, on a beach.
Nick Fury enters the shot...

Wow. Hell, even a Rubik's Cube movie sounds like a better idea than that.
And what's MGM's next project after that? A Jenga movie??

NEEDS TO BE "DARKER", "EDGIER"!

Eccentric Studio Exec pitching idea to the board:
"I got it! Waldo is framed for [Insert:crime] and is on a quest to clear his name and chased by some uptight asshole federal agent.
He's fluent in many languages as well as fully culturally aware of many norms & customs the world-over! Because he's such a super friendly guy food, accommodation, money and revealing of porous border passes come easy to him.
Think of him like the back-packer version of the The Pretender!
We could get that

We could get that Haley Joel Osment kid since he ain't doing shit right now and most importantly he's way CHEAPER than that Shia LeBouf dude! I just need to speak to Joel Schumacher right now and I'm sure he's totally gonna destroy box-office records with this one! WE CAN'T LOSE!!"

Good look marketing this internationally

Only America knows the character as 'Waldo', every other country has it's own local name for the character. The only thing this movie has to bank on is it's character recognition, change the name for many people, you lose that.

wow. good job MGM. insted of taking all this money and getting some film students/small but good projects and funding them, perhaps getting 2-3 good movies out of (lets face it) 20, and actually gaining new talent and lineing your pockets, your going to put a ton of cash into 1 thing. that thing being WALDO? and hopeing that pairents will want to go see this with their kids over renting a pixar movie? Oh my.

Instead of calling it "Where's Waldo" they should call it "What's the point?"

Really?

Do they have to make a movie about everything? Sitting here, I'm hard pressed to think of any children's books that haven't been "re-imagined". Not that they're all bad, but we need more original projects. This is a dumb idea.

I don't really expect this to be all that great, but I understand where MGM is coming from in needing something that will probably be a huge hit for kids and families.

This could be interesting. A priceless jewel is hidden on waldo who sets out on a big adventure. On his trail is the mob, a small time bumbling thief, several government agents, and various individuals from around the world who are trying to steal the jewel from the cluessless tourist. Yeah this could make for decent slapstick comedy.

I hope this is in IMAX 3D so my chances of spotting him are that much better!

I cannot wait for the day years down the road when the studio head or main producer of the film laments about this could have been classic but his people "just couldn't make Waldo edgy enough."

Sometimes I am happy to hear these news stories, because I do wonder how you can turn something that has seemingly no potential to be a movie into a viable hollywood commodity.

Why don't they just create a giant Waldo image filled with thousands of people and put it up on IMAX screens for the ultimate test of Where's Waldo? That I can see.
