New extended scene from Pixar's Brave aims for the bullseye

02.23.2012

Disney's Australian YouTube page is calling this new extended BRAVE clip a trailer, but the video actually plays out like an extended scene.

And it's a good scene in that it contains everything you need to know about the Pixar film: its characters, its tone, and the basic conflict. Now whether the style is to your liking, that's another question entirely. But for me, there's something very un-Pixar about what's being shown here (and I can't help but be turned off by the fact that the archery scene is like so many archery scenes we've already seen on film). Still, it is Pixar after all, and I as a fan remain hopeful. What do you guys say?

BRAVE opens June 22nd.

Synopsis: Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In “Brave,” a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts. Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Wise Woman (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.

Never expected to say this but this looks like I might enjoy it.

Too bad though that it starts out silly like Shrek, but the last minute is terrific.

Not to nitpick, since I know the wardrobe is historically inaccurate anyway, but I thought those dresses were traditionally worn by English women, as opposed to Scottish.

nice visuals as expected

and yet it still seems like a pack of recycled storylines, and unlike a Pixar story.

I'm sorry but this looks absolutely brilliant! The point where the trailer ended brought chills down my spine.

I'm still not sold.
The whole "GRRL POWER" princess thing has been done to death and this cliche arrow splitting scene doesn't help either.

This movie has money written all over it!

It's not even funny.
Buy Disney stock now! Another out of the park hit for Pixar.

You have seen the split arrow archery scene before - Adventures of Robin Hood 1938 or Costner splitting a bulls-eye arrow in Prince of Thieves or a parody in Men in Tights and so forth. Love Pixar, but I am surprised that they have included such a well known and commonly used cinematic scene.

The archery scene is like many archery scenes we've seen before? Alright, in what way? The fact that the unlikely contender gets a perfect shot?
I think it gives us a good idea that she's somebody who is a full-fledged tomboy with lots of practice and full of confidence. The father seems proud (based on all the footage I've seen) but probably not overly excited about it while his wife is around, who seems as if she wants the cookie cutter princess type.
It's not a clip that's going to sway

It's not a clip that's going to sway large amounts of people who didn't like the trailer but it gives us a very good idea of the characters and the tone. It feels like a great return to quality for Pixar after the poor judgement that was Cars 2.
