New Line drops Escape from New York remake, anyone want it?

4 years agoby:

I know you were hoping, whether secretly or not, that the ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK remake would just go away. Well it has to a certain extent.

It won't be housed at New Line or Warner Bros. that's for sure. They've decided to drop the remake and leave it up for grabs to whatever studio wants it.

New Line and producer Neil Moritz have been working on the remake for some time now. Breck Eisner (THE CRAZIES) was attached to direct a script by writers that include Allan Loeb (WALL STREET: MONEY NEVER SLEEPS) and Jamie Moss (X-MEN: FIRST CLASS).

At one time, there was rumor that Gerard Butler and Jeremy Renner may step into the role of Snake. More recently, it was also being said that Tom Hardy might be an option since he is the "go to tough guy" now in Hollywood.

If a studio picks the project up, will they get that pretty little package? Maybe. But who really wants to remake ESCAPE anyway?

Thats actually some pretty decent talent attached to make it, I really enjoyed The Crazies and the writers have made some good stuff.

Then again just like Evil Dead id rather have a sequel than a remake.

Hurray!

This movie is just too damned perfect as is.

Besides, Russell was not a "tough guy" when they made it. He turned himself into one for this part!

kurt russell said it best a few years ago, he was like: "fuck this remake, they want Snake, I'll play him again."

EFNY is a classic and from what I was hearing about this redo (a woman senator instead of the president?)it's best left alone. Good news.

Great News

This is great news, we didn't need another sub-par remake to take our hard earned money at the box office...

Maybe New Line can inject this money into something more productive like a Friday the 13th Part II !!!!!!!!

Ehhh...

On one hand, there was nothing wrong with the orignal. John Carpenter did an amazing job, and I consider it to be his masterpiece. That being said, I think the film has a little room for improvement. A bigger budget, improved special effects, and a strong director and I could see it being a successful remake, the way Death Race improved on the original. I think the only aspect which can't possibly be improved on is casting. There is and only ever will be one Snake Pliskin.

To a certain degree I agree with you but, from what I was hearing about what they were planning to do, those improvements were not going to be delivered. Escape is one of my favorites and I am content to leave it be despite wondering what a mega budget version might be like.

But Death Race wasn't an "improvement" on the original. The original is a classic not because of the story, but because of how cheesy it is. You can't "improve" that by removing it.

I'm glad to be getting rid of unnecessary remakes. Hopefully Oldboy is next.

Good, I hope nobody remakes it. Great movies don't need to be remade.

I remember reading somewhere few years back when Russell said he wouldnt return to action movies (I think when he was asked about being offered to play in Expendables) then goes to say something like he would return to action for sure if he is reprising his role as Snake Plissken but says thats unlikly due to his age and the current talks of the reboot. So lets take advantage of this and get a trilogy. The thing remake/prequel looks interesting but im hoping it will bomb so it makes Carpenter

John Carpenter. Kurt Russell. Escape from Earth. THAT'S what we want, if anything.

Honestly

I'm not a re-make guy, but I genuinely wouldn't be against this one being re-made.

I just finished watching this movie again tonight. And whilst the first one has great cinematography and sets a great mood, it also has a fantastic Kurt Russell in it. But it's also incredibly drawn out.

For forty minutes, honestly not much happens, and then when it does it's not really exciting, Snake just sort of walks or drives from place to place until the movie ends. There's no real sense of tension or

There's no real sense of tension or drama or action. Don't get me wrong, he gets in a fight or two and is always on the run, but nothing really seems threatening, the energy isn't there like, say, The Warriors, which has a similar look and style but has a driving energy behind it (before the crappy director's inserts).

It'd be a shame to lose Russell, but overall I'd be happy to see a STRONG re-make of this.......or you know, a decent sequel.
