New posters for Spike Lee's Oldboy, R.I.P.D. and Star Trek Into Darkness

Apr. 15, 2013by:

More posters premiering today means more trailers to look forward to in the very near future. Here we have a look at the teaser poster for Spike Lee's remake of OLDBOY, three new character posters for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS, and a low res shot at the first poster for R.I.P.D.. Each has a distinct look to it and each makes me more excited for these films to hit theaters already.

First up is the latest poster for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS. Following character posters for Spock and Uhura, we now have new posters for Kirk and John Harrison along with a banner collecting all four images. These are all being released via Apple in anticipation of a new trailer to hit the internet tomorrow. So far, I have been a fan of the marketing for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS and hope the film delivers on all of the mystery it has built for itself. Internally it just amps me up to see what will happen with STAR WARS once J.J. Abrams can dedicate himself fully to the EPISODE VII.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS opens everywhere on May 17. 2013 and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Benedict Cumberbatch, Simon Pegg, Bruce Greenwood, Alice Eve, Karl Urban, John Cho, and Peter Weller.

Next up we have the teaser poster for OLDBOY that premiered at CinemaCon. We shared our take on the footage and it sounds awesome. Now we have this poster and it teases the imprisonment of the main character those familiar with the Korean film or the manga know drives the entire film.

This new take on OLDBOY will follow the same plot as the original source comic and differs from the Park Chan-wook film. Here's the official synopsis for the movie:

OLDBOY is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment.

This poster reminds me a lot of why they are called "teasers" and I hope the first trailer keeps it just as simple.OLDBOY stars Brolin. Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley from a screenplay by Mark Protosevich. It opens in theaters on October 11, 2013.

Lastly, we have a look at R.I.P.D.. Last week we saw the first image showing Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds brandishing some cool looking guns. This poster doesn't differ much from that except now with hideously ugly font all over the stars. For an action movie with a supernatural twist, this is a decidedly boring poster. I was kind of expecting more, but now I have a sneaking suspicion that the trailer will be devoid of much creativity either. Hopefully I am wrong since I was looking forward to this for a long while.

R.I.P.D. opens July 19, 2013.

star trek

Strange...
The TREK TRIO always was KIRK/SPOCK/BONES... But now it's Uhura instead of Bones ?
Even though I can understand it for the sexiness factor, it's STILL get a bit further from Gene's Trek...

I really don't know how people fuck up on posters. It's so bland. As for the Oldboy Remake, if its going to compare it self to the original, why make it then. As least the Departed had elements that separated it from Infernal Affairs.

spike hate

look, i was taken aback by the choice of Spike Lee for something as moody and reliant on direction and cinematography, but really, Spike, in the last 5-10 years has been developing a legitimate set of directing skills. OK, if you still have Do the Right Thing in your head, youre going to hate on this from the start. but i really liked Inside Man, St Anna and 25th Hour and i think if he brings that mood to this pic, we have a winner.

Spike Lee Joint

I simply can't take any movie Spike Lee does seriously when he refers to his film as a "joint". It makes any movie release seem more juvenile. Seeing Oldboy with the Spike Lee Joint tag above it cheapens the film even more. I am not judging the film. It could be great, but this just annoys me.

I saw the film in a test screening, and you won't believe how similar it is to Men In Black...it's exactly the same down to the office, the technology they use, and the good cop/bad cop humor...

The first time Ryan Reynolds dies is the best part in the whole movie.

I think out of all of the posters RIPD is the best one. But ALL of these posters could be much better.

And HERE comes yet another homophobic insult toward The_Soloist...
I don't know if he's gay or not, if it's just some kind of strange (read BAD) humour from you, a private (lame) joke... And quite frankly I don't care not does it matter. All I see is that if it was racist insult instead, you'd already be banned.

That RIPD poster is fucking awful. Why do they continue to give us bland posters for movies?

Oldboy is going to fail in comparison to the South Korean original, why? It will lack the stylized cinematography that Wook is a master at, the soundtrack will likely be a loud exploitation that doesn't effectively reflect what's happening on screen, and of course the incest aspect will be focused on shock value instead of being properly executed to add to the story.

Oh, and you know this because you have seen it already? Don't judge it before it hits theaters. That's just dumb. You're implying that no cinematographer will outpace the original film's director of photography, but guess what? Everyone has someone better than them at something. But not even that: people are masters at adaptation and imitation.

It feels like Spike Lee's Oldboy is following a good path, from early impressions I've been reading. It sounds like it will not be about

It feels like Spike Lee's Oldboy is following a good path, from early impressions I've been reading. It sounds like it will not be about shock value and will still have the metaphorical and psychological weight of the original.

And you just spoiled the biggest twist of the whole movie. Congratulations.

How about a spoiler warning? I know the original and the manga so it doesnt do anything to me but for those who have not, its a pretty Dick move.

Judging from the 'single' early impression, it sounds like they're remaking the South Korean original and not really paying more tribute to the magna source material--what a waste. And one doesn't have to see a movie to judge its likely outcome. It's like me saying Scary Movie V will most likely be a terrible film with cheap laughs and old jokes. Did I have to see it to give it my opinion? No, it's based on previous iterations that make it easier to provide a conclusive stance.

The difference is that you are basing your thoughts on a personal vendetta against the idea of them tampering with a masterpiece for easier consumption by the American people. You have no factual basis for writing the remake off, especially when there is no trailer or clip out for the public to view. You are making an assumption purely on negativity that has sprouted as a result of... I don't even know what.

Scary Movie V does look terrible, but I'm sure you are also saying that because

Scary Movie V does look terrible, but I'm sure you are also saying that because you saw a trailer or heard descriptions of the humor. I know that I didn't write it off completely until it was apparent that they were marketing it to the lowest-common denominator crowd of moviegoers. I didn't let the idea of the past iterations taint my idea... I let the movie display itself before I made a concrete judgment.

A sequel is not a death sentence for a series with not-so-amazing entries. Take Halloween. The first movie was incredible, the second was all right, and everything past that was horrendous. Naturally you would automatically write off any and all sequels after that, according to your idea of judgment. But then H20 came out and that was actually pretty damn good. Same for Batman. Batman and Robin was enough to turn anyone off of another superhero movie, but then Christopher Nolan came in and wiped the floor with Batman!

You can't judge a movie based solely on cast and crew or past entries in a franchise. Especially in the case of Oldboy, though... they are not making a sequel, Spike Lee has never done a remake... there's not much room to write it off completely. Wait until a trailer comes out before you make such a bold judgment.

Was I worried about the remake? Of course. I'm not a fan of Spike Lee for the most part, and I thought it was silly for them to think that they would be able to market the film in America. It's a very niche kind of movie. But after reading the impressions, I feel better about it. I feel like they are doing it for the right reasons, and the crew behind it has quite a good pedigree.

I'm -still- worried, but I was never writing it off until I actually sat down and saw it. I am less worried, but still worried, but I'm not writing it off.

So, to reiterate, because I write posts that are way too long: You have no concrete basis to give a definitive answer on whether or not you will hate this movie. There are no trailers or clips, and only cast, crew, and impressions to go by... and your own personal thoughts, which I assume came about right when it was announced that they were doing a remake of Oldboy at all. Don't let those thoughts jade your judgment. Give it a chance.

Look pretty terrible, why does it look like in every one there's a fan blowing on them? Is that the weapon Cumberbatch is using, a giant space fan? Still really excited for the movie tho!
